Non-Traditional Venues Lead Trend for Weddings, Family Events in 2007

Portland, Maine – April 26, 2007 – In terms of “what’s new” regarding family and private events in 2007, look to non-traditional venues that make the most of guests’ downtime, advises Steve Robertson, Chief Technical Officer at Eventective (http://www.eventective.com/), the Internet’s most comprehensive and popular meeting and event space search engine.

More and more families and friends are researching special interest and non-traditional venues such as resorts, ranches, inns, and estate mansions as alternatives to booking traditional full-service hotels to host their wedding, family reunion, or bar mitzvah.

The reason, Robertson said, is the unique value that non-traditional venues can bring, with more options, activities, and accommodations for guests.

According to Eventective’s 25,000 visitors a day, choosing “non-traditional venues” to hold family and private events offers a host of benefits, including:

  • More Things to Do – Smaller, specialty venues can offer a much fuller range of down-time options and recreational activities for guests. Ranging from BBQs, horse trail riding, spa treatments, to golfing, guests often want “something new”, or at least a new twist on a tradition to make the event memorable.
  • Greater Availability – A greater availability of choice means less hassle and research when securing a venue for peak season dates. As a result of the marketplace dynamics, 2007 shows a continuous, steady increase in the supply of unique venues.
  • Silver Tray Service – Non-traditional venues often pull out the stops in terms of service. Organizers appreciate the high levels of creativity, flexibility, and even the personal touch that a smaller facility goes to lengths to offer.
  • Better Affordability – Specialty venues often exhibit equal enthusiasm to compete on the cost front, and generally can offer lower overall costs that traditional venues.

Venues that are expected to top the list in 2007 as a “hot place” to hold a wedding or family event are: Resorts, Golf Courses, Museums/Art Galleries, Outdoor Parks/Botanical Gardens, Inns/Bed & Breakfasts, Theatres, Mansions/Private Estates, Wineries/Vineyards/Breweries, or Sports Arenas.

To find the perfect unique venue, visit Eventective at http://www.eventective.com/, where a record-setting 307,000 event spaces, 91,000 facilities, and 37,000 related service providers throughout the U.S. are listed and ready for booking.

About Eventective

For professional event planners, business meeting organizers, and individuals planning weddings and parties, the portal's listings feature 307,000 event spaces, 91,000 facilities, and 37,000 related service providers throughout the U.S. and include traditional hotel and restaurant-based properties as well as niche and special-interest facilities that are often not presented elsewhere.

Documentation, Training Key for Labs to Meet Compliance Challenges

NEWTON, MASS. – April 24, 2007 – For any company, institution, college, university, or healthcare or medical facility with a laboratory, documentation and training are key for keeping Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) programs up-to-date with current compliance standards, said Kevin Coghlan, Director of EH&S Compliance and Strategic Support at EH&E (http://www.ehehinc.com/).

“Laboratory managers and safety officers know that compliance programs are becoming increasingly complex and challenging to maintain,” said Coghlan, “But the good news is that EH&E’s environmental health and safety experts have identified three proven strategies for improving program compliance deficiencies in any company or institution with a lab.”

The most common laboratory deficiencies that EH&E staff find during compliance reviews (or audits) at laboratories are driven by three root causes: safety violations in the lab, program organization and accessibility, and training deficiencies, Coghlan said.

To remedy these common pitfalls, Coghlan discusses proven strategies for resolution.

A common “hot spot” for lab compliance audits is safety violations, such as inadequate upkeep like improper storage or labeling of chemicals, improperly maintained satellite accumulation areas, improper use of personnel protective equipment, blocked aisles and exits, and inaccessible first aid and spill kits.

Rather than simply increasing the amount of classroom training for laboratory staff, Coghlan recommends a more effective method of instituting a schedule of regular, in-house laboratory inspections.

“Lab inspections can be a valuable teaching tool if used properly, but the success of these inspections is directly impacted by the presence of a feedback mechanism to document corrective actions and identify trends,” said Coghlan.

“If there are organization and accessibility issues, like missing or out-dated documents, permits, inspections, and data collection requirements, then consider implementing a readily accessible, organizational mechanism to improve the situation,” stated Coghlan.

In fact, EH&E developed such a program based on a Microsoft® SharePoint® platform that is used to manage many client EH&S compliance programs. Using this web-based, project collaboration tool, EH&E staff crafted a unique program management system that provides ready access to program information and program status.

“By far, the largest struggle we find in labs is with employee training requirements,” stated Coghlan.

Employee health and safety training is an essential part of meeting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Occupational Safety Health Administration compliance requirements. The inability of organizations to adequately train employees and maintain accurate training records are common deficiencies found by EH&E auditors.

“While most labs utilize a classroom approach to training, which can include, printed materials, videos, or games, a method that EH&E staff has found successful is to streamline employee training through a web-based training program. Web training improves overall compliance status by making the training convenient for employees and the automated management of training records minimizes the staff time needed for this regulatory requirement,” added Coghlan.

Due to the complexity and ever-changing nature of research activities, lab EH&S programs can be extremely challenging to develop and maintain.

“By analyzing the root causes of your laboratory deficiencies, strategies for improvement can be implemented to remedy the situation and keep the lab EH&S program in good standing,” said Coghlan.

For more information on these solutions, or to learn about how to obtain those developed by EH&E for use with your own program, visit http://www.eheinc.com/ehe_web_solutions.htm. Or, contact EH&E directly by phone: 1-800-825-5343 or email: contact@eheinc.com.

EU Adopts Fluorimetric Method as Pasteurization Test Standard; Advanced Instruments’ Fluorophos® Test System Flourishes as International Reference

NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS, USA – April 23, 2007 – The new European Union (EU) standards regulating dairy pasteurization testing that go into effect on May 6th will not only benefit consumer safety throughout Europe, but further affirm Advanced Instruments’ Fluorophos® Test System as a true standard around the world.

On May 6, 2007, EU regulations adopt the Fluorimetric Method (ISO Standard 11816-1) as the new standard in assessing the correct pasteurization of milk, replacing the colorimetric methods used to measure Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) since the 1930’s. Other regulations increase the sensitivity requirements for ALP testing criteria to 350mU/L of phenol per liter from the previous level of 500mU/L. The tougher criteria bring EU requirements in line with the stricter testing controls already in place in the United States and other countries.

The implementation of the new EU regulations further solidifies the position of the Fluorophos® Test System – Advanced Instruments’ rapid, extremely sensitive fluorimetric method for assessing ALP – as a true international test reference standard for dairy quality and process control.

In addition to representing the new EU reference method status, the Fluorophos® Test System has been unanimously approved as a full international standard method by The International Dairy Federation (IDF 155), the International Standards Organisation, (ISO 11816), and the CEN European Standards Organisation. The Fluorophos® system is also approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the US Interstate Milk Shippers, and AOAC International.

“The Fluorophos® Test System is the world’s only 3-minute fluorimetric method with multiple international agency approvals,” said Ken Micciche, Director of Marketing, Advanced Instruments, Inc. (www.aicompanies.com).

The Fluorophos® Test System delivers accuracy over a range of ALP levels, including low values, for milk from cows (whole, semi-skimmed, skimmed and flavored) as well as from sheep and goats. The benefits of implementation include higher precision, reproducibility, and a ten-fold improvement in test sensitivity. The System also enables a significant improvement in troubleshooting capabilities by allowing immediate process validation following maintenance. This improves HACCP and food safety programs to protect consumers and continue manufacturing quality, consistent products.

“On May 6th, the European Union improves the accuracy and sensitivity of dairy testing throughout Europe, thus improving the safety of pasteurized milk and the health and well-being of all consumers,” Micciche said.

For more information, contact Micciche at Advanced Instruments, online at www.aicompanies.com/ai_products/alp/alp.htm, or by telephone +1-781-320-9000.

Swedish Medical Center Selects Sunnex Task Lamps to Illuminate Workspace for Anesthesiologists

NATICK, MASSACHUSETTS, USA – April 17, 2007Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Wash., is illuminating the workspace for its anesthesiologists, and ultimately improving patient care, with the installation of Sunnex halogen task lighting on its anesthesia machines.

“Improving the reliability and quality of workspace illumination by installing new Sunnex task lighting for our anesthesiologists creates a safer and more productive environment for them to do their tasks and improves the overall environment of care for our patients,” said Steve Sands, C.B.E.T., Swedish Medical Center, the largest, most comprehensive, nonprofit health provider in the Pacific Northwest. The Center includes three hospital campuses, a freestanding emergency room and specialty center, and a network of 12 primary-care clinics.

“The new Sunnex task lights are a 100 percent improvement,” said Sands. He said the previous use of clip-on task lamps didn’t provide the light the staff needed for their tasks. The clip-on models also proved to be a nuisance as they were prone to falling off the equipment.

Sands’ solution focused on the selection of Sunnex’s easily integratable model HS 705 halogen task lighting. The task lights feature a compact head made of high impact polyamide plastic that allows for unobstructed views of a workspace. The task lamps are highly customizable and particularly ideal for use in small or hard to reach areas. They feature a high intensity 20 watt halogen bulb, which delivers more than 2,000 hours of life, and are available in either a flexible gooseneck or articulating arm, and a variety of lengths and mounting configurations.

Sands ordered nearly 50 of the Sunnex task lights, configured with either a 20-inch or a 27-inch gooseneck and with a power switch and dimmer on the head – to further improve ease-of-use. He mounted the task lamps directly to each of medical center’s anesthesia machines.

“The permanent mount provides a safer and more flexible task lighting solution while the Sunnex HS 705 task lights deliver more than enough focused bright, white light needed to both illuminate the equipment meters and to perform any of their required tasks,” he said.

“Everyone agrees,” said Sands, “that our new Sunnex task lighting is a pretty slick solution.”
