VeriPRO from Howard Leight Wins Prestigious Industry Award for Innovation

howardleight_4c2SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA, June 21 2010 – The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has awarded its Product Innovation Award to VeriPRO®, the earplug fit testing system from Howard Leight®. The award, which is designed to recognize excellence and innovation within the safety industry, was presented at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards Gala Dinner held during Safety and Health Expo 2010.

VeriPRO makes it easy to determine the Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) of a worker fitted with any earplugs through a simple listening test.

laptop

This allows both safety managers and workers to ascertain if the worker receives optimal protection from noise with their earplugs, requires additional training, or needs to try a different model.

“Hearing conservation is an area that we are passionate about,” said Josephine Audoin, Marketing Manager for Sperian Protection UK. “We are delighted that the genuine innovation demonstrated by VeriPRO has been recognized by the British safety community.”

A report recently issued by the UK Health and Safety Executive, entitled “Real World Use and Performance of Hearing Protection,” gave a positive indication about the availability of appropriate Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) in the UK. However, it also reported that “possibly

only 60% of workers supposedly using hearing protection are in fact protected.” One of the major reasons for this (and this applies particularly to ear plugs) is that the HPD is incorrectly fitted. Another concern for employers is the weakness of the published attenuation ratings system in regards to the specification of earplugs. The published attenuation ratings system only provides a theoretical level of hearing protection as opposed to an actual measurement of protection.

To help combat these issues, Howard Leight developed VeriPRO. VeriPRO benefits those that manage safety and employees alike. For the safety

professional, occupational health manager or site manager it fulfils European Directive 2003/10/EC requirements for training. For employees, VeriPRO demonstrates the importance of hearing protection in the workplace, and helps employees select and compare protectors to find the best choice for their ears and specific applications.

Unlike other field verification systems, VeriPRO can be used with any earplug, and the tests performed in virtually any setting. VeriPRO offers two test protocols. The Complete Check runs employees through five frequencies to determine PAR and is recommended for annual use. The Quick Check is a simplified test of earplug fit at one frequency, used as a fast and easy pass/fail check for more frequent use.

The VeriPRO system consists of PC-based software, an audiometrically optimized headset, audio processor, QuickStart guide and USB cable.

Motivating Workers to be Ear-Responsible

hearforever_final-logo-332“Da be way oo roec your hearing rom haardu noi eboer i oo onidindly oo hearing roecer around loud noi.”

These may seem like nonsense words to a reader, but this is what normal speech and conversation may sound like to an employee who lives with noise-induced hearing loss. (*For a translation, see the end of our article linked below.)

Safety professionals know the hazards of loud noise, but how can we convey that risk awareness to workers, and motivate them to take personal and pro-active actions? Read any Hearing Conservation regulation cover to cover, and the word motivation never appears. But the safety-savvy employer will know that motivation is the keystone to preventing noise-induced hearing loss. Motivated employees take responsibility for protecting their hearing both on- and off-the-job, rather than just viewing hearing protectors as a workplace compliance issue.

Read more for three tools used in successful Hearing Conservation Programs for instilling the risk awareness that motivates workers to take action to conserve their own hearing:  http://www.hearforever.org/tools-to-educate/motivating-workers-to-be-ear-responsible

New White Paper Details Six Common Bad Assumptions About Hearing Protection

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA – December 1, 2009 In the world of personal protective equipment, bad assumptions are hazardous and can result in injury — or worse. Yet, despite 25 years of government regulation, a handful of persistent bad assumptions are widespread — endangering both the effectiveness of occupational Hearing Conservation Programs (HCPs) – and worker hearing.

A new free, white paper from Howard Leight, Bad Assumptions about Hearing Protection provides an insight into the common and potentially dangerous misconceptions associated with hearing protection. It is available to download from: http://www.hearforever.org/badassumptionsarticle.

The white paper is authored by Brad K. Witt, MA, CCC-A, past president of the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA) and Director of Hearing Conservation at Howard Leight/Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC, a leading global provider of passive and intelligent hearing protection solutions.

“Specifically, the white paper details the six most common ‘bad assumptions’ about hearing protection for noise-exposed workers. These assumptions, if left unchecked, have the ability to torpedo an otherwise healthy Hearing Conservation Program, and leave the door open for hearing loss among workers exposed to hazardous noise,” said Witt.

The white paper discusses:

  • Bad Assumption #1: Hearing protection is self-explanatory.
  • Bad Assumption #2: Any earplug in the ear is blocking some noise.
  • Bad Assumption #3: An earplug halfway in the ear blocks about half the noise.
  • Bad Assumption #4. Cut the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) in half to predict real-world protection.
  • Bad Assumption #5. There’s no way to measure real attenuation on a worker wearing earplugs.
  • Bad Assumption #6. There’s no way to measure the noise dose of a worker under the hearing protectors throughout their workday

“Bad assumptions sink many well-intentioned workplace hearing safety initiatives. But avoiding these simple bad assumptions about hearing protection helps a Hearing Conservation Program stay on solid ground, and do just what it is designed to do: prevent noise-induced hearing loss,” Witt said.

To download the new white paper, Bad Assumptions about Hearing Protection, visit: http://www.hearforever.org/badassumptionsarticle.
