AirPal Expands Line of Air-Activated Transfer Pads to include Multi-Purpose Patient Positioning Functionality

4c6bbb7a North Wales, Penn, August 18, 2010AirPal®, a leading innovator and supplier of lateral air transfer and positioning technology, has announced the expansion of its line of air-activated transfer pads to incorporate multi-purpose patient positioning functionality.
“This announcement marks the launch of an entire new series of AirPal Safe Anatomic Positioning™ systems,” said Jim Weedling, President AirPal, Inc. “Among other functions, these exciting new products will enable nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other caregivers to optimally adjust a patient’s angle of elevation for procedures that require precise airway positioning, and more easily transfer patients laterally before and after the procedure.”

Announced today was the AirPal RAMP® All-In-One, which stands for Rapid Airway Management Positioning All-In-One system. It is designed primarily for the Operating Room (OR) to facilitate airway management in applications such as pre-oxygenation prior to anesthesia intubation, airway axes alignment for tracheal tube insertion to improve POGO scores and optimize glottic exposure, assistance with extubation to minimize the threat of tissue trauma, and many other procedures that require precise ear to sternal notch positioning. Other potential application areas include use in intensive care situations, emergency medical transport, and certain clinical care procedures.

Safe Anatomic Positioning system

“The RAMP All-In-One is a Safe Anatomic Positioning system that combines lateral transfer technology and flexible patient positioning,” said Weedling. “Its objectives are to afford greater safety and comfort for the patient, provide new levels of convenience for surgeons and anesthesiologists, and to assist in the prevention of patient handling injuries.”

Injuries to nurses caused by transferring or repositioning patients have been cited as a significant factor behind the medical industry’s escalating worker’s compensation costs. AirPal pioneered the original concept of using air-activated pads to more safely and easily transfer patients from one surface to another.

Because the RAMP module enables the patient’s angle of elevation to be adjusted via a pneumatic AirPod™, OR staff will no longer be required to manually lift the patient and use linens or pillows to achieve the desired elevation. The RAMP differs from conventional patient positioning techniques because it offers continuous adjustability, unlike the static wedges or linen props that must be readjusted each time the patient is moved. The RAMP was developed over a period of several years in collaboration with leading medical practitioners.

For more information regarding AirPal Safe Anatomic Positioning systems and the newly introduced RAMP All-In-One, contact AirPal at 800-633-4725 or http://airpal.com.

Advanced Instruments Introduces New Levels of Osmometer Standard Solutions Supporting Changes to USP <785> Osmolality Test Requirements

NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A. — March 30, 2010Advanced Instruments is pleased to introduce three new levels of Osmometer Standard Solutions to its product offering. The 200, 400 and 1000 mOsm/kg H20 level standards are NIST- traceable salt solutions that are packaged in 2mL ampules, 10 ampules per box. The kits are available for immediate release.

Products and AI Part Numbers

  • 200 mOsm/kg H20 Calibration Standard  – 3MA020
  • 400 mOsm/kg H20 Calibration Standard – 3MA040
  • 1000 mOsm/kg H20 Calibration Standard – 3MA100

The new levels were created in response to recent changes in the USP Chapter <785> Osmolality and Osmolarity. The new requirement specifies that instrument calibration must be confirmed with at least one solution that lies within 50 mOsm/kg H20 of the value of the test solution or the center of the expected range of osmolality of the test solution.

In the past, researchers were required to verify calibration with 2 solutions which spanned the expected range of the test solution, and there was no requirement for how close these levels needed to be to the test solution.

“The tighter new USP requirement created the need for a broader offering of osmolality standard solutions, particularly in the 200 to 1000 mOsm/kg range where many of the pharmaceutical, parenteral and IV drug products are formulated,” says Kelly Peterson, Product Manager.

“Pharmaceutical customers were coming to us and asking if we could provide these solutions. With our position as the industry leader in osmometry, we felt an obligation to deliver these products to our customers,” Peterson said. “These new levels complement the current AI offering of osmolality standards. Customers now have standard solutions that are commercially available in order to be fully compliant with USP General Chapter <785>.”

Paper Finds Microdroplet PCR Enrichment Is Ideal Targeted Sequencing Solution For Large-Scale Population Studies

rdt-702290LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A. – November 2, 2009 – Data generated using microdroplet PCR technology as an enrichment method is particularly well suited for performing sequence-based association studies, according to a paper published today by researchers at the Scripps Translational Science Institute, the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and RainDance Technologies, Inc.

The study, led by Kelly A. Frazer, Ph.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Chief, Division of Genome Information Sciences, UC San Diego Department of Pediatrics, evaluated microdroplet PCR’s advantages in performing sequence enrichment for targeted sequencing over the gold-standard traditional PCR approach. “These benefits translated into a much higher efficiency of sequencing and a much more cost-effective way to do population studies,” Frazer said, in commenting about the paper.

Entitled “Microdroplet-based PCR Enrichment for Large-Scale Targeted Sequencing,” the paper was published today on Nature Biotechnology’s Web site at Microdroplet-based PCR enrichment for large-scale targeted sequencing : Abstract : Nature Biotechnology (www.nature.com/nbt/journal/vaop/ncurrent/abs/nbt.1583.html) and will appear in the November issue of the magazine.

“I believe this new technology will be used to study the basic underpinnings of diseases and to understand their root causes,” said Eric J. Topol, M.D., Director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute and a co-author. “For instance, we’re now using it to understand the causes of anorexia nervosa. We also can use the technology to comprehend a disease’s response to a therapy or to determine a drug’s side effects. We even can employ it to study the healthy aging process. These are all applications for microdroplet PCR that will help us understand the vital aspects of human health and disease,” said Dr. Topol, in commenting on the paper.

The paper said that to efficiently perform population-based sequencing studies using next-generation sequencing platforms, it is important to be able to simultaneously examine large numbers of targeted sequences. “These results indicate that even when simultaneously amplifying 3,976 targeted sequences, microdroplet PCR generates a high ratio of target sequence to background sequence,” the authors said. The study concluded that data quality is independent of the number of amplicons. A path to scale to 20,000 amplicons while maintaining high performance was also demonstrated.

The paper’s authors said the microdroplet PCR process proved to be extremely efficient, with more than 99.6% of all amplicons being successful and with highly reproducible amplification of targeted sequences between samples. The data also showed that equivalently accurate SNP calling can be performed using microdroplet PCR whether the DNA is unamplified or whole-genome amplified from nanogram quantities. The allelic bias error rate of approximately 0.1% resulted in few known variants to be incorrectly called, further attesting to the robustness of the process.

“We were impressed with how well the technology worked,” said Dr. Frazer. “Compared to other types of sequence enrichment, we were able to generate greater uniform coverage of targeted sequences. In addition, the problems we typically encounter with standard PCR, such as difficult primer design and high allelic bias, were not observed with the microdroplet-based PCR workflow.”

“Efficient targeted sequencing will be critical as researchers study genetic variation in large populations to determine the causes of cancer and other complex diseases,” said Christopher McNary, President and Chief Executive Officer, RainDance Technologies. “This study confirms that our innovative RDT 1000 microdroplet-based platform is able to detect substantially higher numbers of variants in the targeted sequences than either solution-based hybridization or molecular inversion probes. This platform provides scientists with an exciting and highly effective new technology that accelerates research into the causes of these devastating diseases,” said McNary.

The company’s RainStorm™ technology produces picoliter-volume droplets at a rate of 10 million per hour. Each droplet is the functional equivalent of an individual test tube and can contain a single molecule, reaction, or cell. This versatile technology can adapt proven assays for high-speed workflows with minimized process-induced bias or error.

RainDances initial application focuses on the targeted sequencing of the human genome – one of the fastest-growing segments of the $1 billion DNA sequencing market. This application enables the high-resolution analysis of genetic variation between individuals and populations at a level unmatched by current methodology.
