AGAWAM, Mass. — Jan. 23, 2012 — A new white paper outlining the six steps that pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers must employ to qualify disinfectants used in their environmental cleaning processes is now available from Microtest Laboratories athttp://www.microtestlabs.com/6stepspaper-disinfectant-qualification.

“Sterile pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing environments require an effective cleaning and disinfection program to maintain aseptic conditions and prevent the microbial contamination of the product. The qualification of the chemical disinfectants used in these environments is extremely important, yet it is often overlooked,” stated Deborah Ensign, supervisor, R&D of Microtest Laboratories, in the new white paper, “Six Steps to Qualifying Disinfectants.”

In fact, “disinfectant qualifications require more planning, time, and resources than many companies realize,” she said.

“Any time a new disinfectant is introduced into the cleaning process within the facility, a qualification should be performed. From start to finish, a disinfectant qualification can require from 2 to 12 months.

“The timeline for a disinfectant qualification will depend on a number of variables, including the number of disinfectants and challenge organisms being tested as well as the number of surfaces (for the coupon method) being evaluated,” Ensign noted.

“The bottom line is that no matter whether the disinfectant qualification is performed internally — or by an outside testing laboratory — these six steps must be addressed,” she warned.

Download a free copy of the white paper, “Six Steps to Qualifying Disinfectants” for pharmaceutical manufacturing companies from Microtest Laboratories website athttp://www.microtestlabs.com/6stepspaper-disinfectant-qualification.

Deborah Ensign is supervisor, R&D Lab, at Microtest Laboratories Inc. She has over 20 years of experience in regulatory microbiology and contract laboratory operations. Ms. Ensign supervises Microtest’s Specialized Microbiology department. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in microbiology and is a nationally registered microbiologist. Ms. Ensign oversees all reusable testing (cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization) and serves as a resource for USP testing, specifically <51>, <61>, and <62>.

AGAWAM, MASS. – January 10, 2012 – Microtest Laboratories has announced that the company will manufacture and provide supporting pharmaceutical testing services for ImmusanT, Inc.’s Nexvax2® immunotherapeutic vaccine for its expected upcoming clinical trial.

In addition to manufacturing Nexvax2, Microtest will provide a full range of testing services to ImmusanT supporting its drug product manufacture, including method transfer activities, complete final product release testing, storage and stability.

ImmusanT recently raised $20 million in financing to advance the development of their technology, Nexvax2, for the treatment of celiac disease. Celiac disease is an inherited autoimmune disorder that is triggered by the consumption of foods containing gluten causing an immune response resulting in inflammation of the small intestine. Safety, tolerability and bioactivity of Nexvax2 have been established in a Phase 1 clinical study.

“As a one-stop source of on-site pharmaceutical testing and manufacturing services, Microtest provides a fast, efficient, cost-effective — and risk-minimizing — alternative to subcontracting with a variety of providers at multiple locations,” said Alex Mello, Director of Project Management, Microtest Laboratories. “We deliver the flexibility, solutions, and problem-solving experience manufacturers must have to ensure the most expeditious release of their product.”

Microtest Laboratories provides flexible, customizable aseptic processing and fill/finish services – and a full-range of pharmaceutical testing services – for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies of all sizes conducting Phase 1, 2, or 3 clinical trials. Microtest fill/finish operations comply with U.S. FDA and European EMA guidelines. Microtest has been inspected by the U.S. FDA, U.S. DEA, and Qualified Persons (QP) for both the manufacture and release testing of final drug product.

AGAWAM, MASS. – Nov. 2, 2011 – A new white paper detailing the new scope of reusable medical device cleaning validations is available free from Microtest Laboratories on the Web at http://www.microtestlabs.com/new-scope-cleaning-validation-paper.

“Cleaning validation for reusable medical devices is an important step in proving their safety. Available guidance documents now indicate that the traditional method of validating cleanliness, spore log reduction, will no longer be acceptable. Analytical assays capable of providing quantitative results will now be required instead,” writes white paper author Patrick Kenny, Manager of Analytical Services, Microtest Laboratories.

In the new white paper, “The New Scope of Reusable Medical Device Cleaning Validations,” Kenny notes that “although a new requirement for reusable medical devices, these tests are traditional analytical assays that are performed routinely on other types of samples.”

“An effective protocol and report that includes justifications for the test soil and assays chosen, as well as thorough documentation of all parameters used in the validation, will help ensure success for the device’s submission,” he notes.

In the paper, Kenny also discusses cleaning validation analytical assays as well as various methods and scenarios related to performing the validation. His recommendations are based on several key documents relating to reusable device cleaning validations that are either in draft or final form. They include AAMI document TIR30:2003, a comprehensive guide to medical device cleaning validations. TIR30 is currently in revision, and an updated version is scheduled for 2011 release.

Kenny holds a M.S. degree in Chemistry and has spent the past 13 years working in QC, R&D and manufacturing laboratories. At Microtest, Kenny leads the services group performing medical device and pharmaceutical analytical testing for companies worldwide.

Downloada free copy of the white paper, “The New Scope of Reusable Medical Device Cleaning Validations,” from the Microtest Laboratories website at http://www.microtestlabs.com/new-scope-cleaning-validation-paper.

Microtest’s broad portfolio of medical device and combination product testing services include sterilization validation, reusable device studies, endotoxin and sterility testing, and package validation.

Honeywell Safety Products today introduced MAX® Small earplugs — an extension to the flagship Howard Leight® MAX single-use earplug family. MAX Small’s reduced size offers people with smaller ear canals a more comfortable fit and high attenuation (NRR 30).

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA – November 1, 2011 — Honeywell Safety Products today introduced MAX® Small earplugs — an extension to the flagship Howard Leight® MAX single-use earplug family. MAX Small’s reduced size offers people with smaller ear canals a more comfortable fit and high attenuation (NRR 30).

MAX Small has the same bell shape and patented varied-cell polyurethane foam as the standard MAX earplug, though is 20% smaller in geometry.

Through customer feedback and evaluations with Howard Leight’s VeriPRO® ear plug fit testing system, employees with smaller ear canals have reported trouble obtaining a good fit – and adequate protection – from other high attenuating roll-down foam earplugs on the market.

“The right ear plug should feel comfortable in the ear canal without compromising protection. MAX Small meets that need by ensuring a high level of attenuation and a more comfortable fit as in a single-use foam earplug,” said Renee S. Bessette, COHC, Global Brand Manager, Howard Leight / Honeywell Safety Products.

In end-user trials involving automobile manufacturing workers and safety inspectors, individuals with smaller ear canals have reported achieving a better in-ear fit — and attained higher attention — with MAX Small earplugs than with the use of larger single-use earplugs.

MAX Small is available in both corded and uncorded models, and is available immediately from industrial safety distributors in the US and Canada.

A new, free white paper assists schools and municipalities with management of the challenges and costs that can result from the discovery of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their buildings.

Needham, Mass. – October 31, 2011 – A new, free white paper assists schools and municipalities with management of the challenges and costs that can result from the discovery of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in their buildings.

The paper titled “What You Need to Know About Managing PCBs in Schools” details the nature of PCBs in buildings, required compliance issues, potential liabilities, and current risk management strategies for dealing with PCBs in school buildings.

“The current broad based regulatory focus on PCB-contaminated building products represents a significant liability for schools, municipalities, building owners, real estate developers, REITS, financing institutions, and contractors, “says John McCarthy, President and co-founder of EH&E, a Needham, Massachusetts-based environmental services firm.

“The scientific, engineering, and regulatory aspects of building-related PCBs are complex and development of safe, cost effective solutions requires a detailed understanding of their often subtle interrelationships. Attempting to address this issue with incomplete information can dramatically impact the cost of operations, renovation or demolition of a building. Costs can quickly rise to millions of dollars for a single school building. Administrators of schools and other municipal real estate must be aware of the regulatory requirements, implications for building operations, and strategies to effectively minimize their risk and remediation costs,” he said.

This white paper describes a strategy to effectively identify potential risks avoid regulatory mishaps, address PCB-containing materials in a systematic manner and maintain a healthy school environment. It also provides guidance on how to assess the need for, and effectively estimate the costs of any remediation efforts, so that these costs can be appropriately managed and minimized in the project budget.

Download the white paper “What You Need to Know About Managing PCBs in Schools” at http://www.eheinc.com/pcb_mgmt_schools.htm.

— New Mass. Bank Surpasses More Than 49% of All FDIC-Insured Banks Nationally After Only Nine Quarters —

NEWTON, MASS. — October 28, 2011 — First Commons Bank of Newton, Mass., today reported that its assets have grown to more than $152 million during its ninth quarter of operations ended September 30, 2011. This reflects a 44% increase or over $46 million versus the asset level of $105 million reported for the quarter ending September 30, 2010. The bank began operations on July 22, 2009, and serves businesses and individuals in Newton, Wellesley, Waltham, and eastern Massachusetts.

“With more than 7,400 FDIC-insured banks in the U.S. filing reports for the quarter ended June 30, 2011, First Commons Bank’s assets have now surpassed those of more than 3,700 other banks, or more than 49%, after just nine quarters of operations,” said Tony Nuzzo, Chairman, President, and CEO.

“While we are pleased with our asset growth over the first two years of operations, we remain focused on achieving sustained profitability,” Nuzzo said.

The Bank reported net loans have grown to $105 million, compared to $50 million as of September 30, 2010, representing an increase of 111% or $55 million. For the nine months ended September 30, 2011, the provision for loan losses increased by approximately $800,000 versus one year ago. For the same period, the Bank’s net interest margin increased by 58% to 3.10%, from 1.96%.

“We are also pleased that we expanded our bank to include a new site in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in August 2011, allowing us to increase our ability to fill the consumer and business voids created by the large banks,” Nuzzo said.

First Commons Bank’s financial results are available on the FDIC’s Web site at http://goo.gl/afM4N.

Immunetics, Inc. announced plans to present a novel, rapid test for bacterial contamination of platelets at the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Annual Meeting, Oct. 21st-25th, in San Diego.

Boston, Mass. — October 18, 2011 — Immunetics, Inc. announced plans to present a novel, rapid test for bacterial contamination of platelets at the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) Annual Meeting, Oct. 21st-25th, in San Diego.

Bacterial contamination of platelets has been identified as the #1 infectious risk of transfusion, with approximately 1 out of 2,000 platelet units contaminated. Transfusion of bacterially contaminated platelets poses a significant health risk, potentially resulting in serious to fatal illness in the recipient. Traditional methods for detecting bacteria are based on inoculation of platelet samples into culture bottles followed by a 24-72 hour waiting period. In addition to the lengthy incubation period, recent studies have shown these methods to be prone to both false positive and false negative results. Culture testing has been routine for single donor platelets but is not practical for pooled whole blood-derived platelets, which must be used within 4 hours of pooling. About five million platelet units are collected annually in the United States along with an equal number in other countries.

Immunetics’ BacTx® rapid test can detect bacterial contamination by clinically relevant species in less than one hour, at levels below those shown to be harmful to transfusion recipients.

Multi-center clinical trials have been concluded in which the performance of the BacTx test was evaluated on whole blood-derived random-donor platelet units.

The results of these studies, and implications for other studies, will be presented and discussed by two clinical investigators at the AABB Meeting in a breakfast workshop entitled “BacTx – A Novel Method for the Detection of Bacteria in Platelets,” on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at 7:00-8:15 a.m., in Room 29 C/D in the San Diego Convention Center. The presenters are: W. Andrew Heaton, M.D., Sr. Director of Transfusion Medicine, NSLIJ Health System and Michael R. Jacobs, M.D., Ph.D., Director, Clinical Microbiology, University Hospitals, Case Medical Center. The BacTx test is currently under pre-market review by the FDA.

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA — Honeywell First Responder is proud to introduce the next generation of tactical intelligent hearing protection and communication systems for military and tactical operations at the AUSA 2011 Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, DC, October 10 – 12, 2011. QUIETPRO® QP400 provides soldiers with smart personal hearing protection, situational awareness enhancement, and the clearest incoming and outgoing communication throughout the full spectrum of training and deployment operations.

“As a Tactical Communication and Protection System (TCAPS), QUIETPRO QP400 enables soldiers to communicate in combat scenarios without compromising their ability to hear their natural surrounding and their tactical communications,” said Brian Burns, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired), US Army, Business Development Director for Government Programs, Honeywell First Responder Products. “QUIETPRO QP400 delivers the clearest in-ear communication essential for understanding and adapting to rapidly changing environments.

“On the battlefield we were always taught to ‘Shoot, Move and Communicate.’ Half of communication is the ability to hear. QUIETPRO QP400 allows the soldier to hear in all situations and by protecting their hearing they are able to accomplish the mission and come home safely.”

The fastest adaptive hearing protection for superior situational awareness and understanding in rapidly changing noise environments.

The new Honeywell QUIETPRO QP400 improves a soldier’s two-way communications and speech intelligibility, especially in high noise. Its patented digital Active Noise Reduction (ANR) technology delivers revolutionary results by continuously monitoring ambient sound, and reducing the levels of noise across the spectrum of frequencies to acceptable levels in real time. This allows soldiers to hear ambient sounds at safe levels – even in intermittent and impact noise – and provides increasing low frequency attenuation for clear, intelligible communications.

Flexible, smart one solution radio communications for seamless transition between mounted and dismounted mobility platforms.

On foot patrol, mounted in a vehicle, or in the air, QUIETPRO QP400’s new quick connection/disconnection cables allow full jump-on/plug-in transition on all mobility platforms. QUIETPRO QP400 now features a four-channel/intercom capability through a smart comms hub, and adapts to the widest range of radio and intercom platforms, enabling soldiers to be networked and connected during all stages of their mission.

New ergonomic design and superior ease-of-use.

QUIETPRO QP400’s new push-button interface provides quick and easy access and control of functions while its one-side cable design eliminates excess connections. Its new voice feedback menu walks the user through each function for easy operation, and control of system function and modes.

Since entered into operational service, more than 63,000 of the original Nacre QUIETPRO intelligent hearing and communication system have been fielded across 13 countries. More than 40,000 are in daily service with the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, US Special Forces and U.S. Government agencies, and is the only in-ear intelligent hearing protection and communication system approved for the U.S. Army Nett Warrior soldier modernization program.

The QUIETPRO QP400 intelligent hearing protection and communication system from Honeywell First Responder will be on display at AUSA, and will be available from military and tactical distributors in the United States.
