FLORHAM PARK, NEW JERSEY, USA, March 2, 2010 — ASCO Numatics, the world’s leading manufacturer of comprehensive fluid automation, flow control, and pneumatics solutions, has introduced the ASCO 411 Series miniature solenoid valve that offers up to twice the life of competing products plus higher flow rate performance. The new valve is ideal for applications in pharmaceutical, medical, analytical, and instrumentation products.

“Now, original equipment manufacturers (OEM) can receive the benefits of longer life, smaller size, lighter weight, higher flow, and lower power consumption — all in one miniature solenoid valve,” said Robert W. Kemple, Jr., Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing - Americas, ASCO Numatics. “The 411 Series dramatically reduces the design tradeoffs and compromises engineers must make in applying valves to their products.”

The 411 Series’ unique plunger design significantly reduces wear on the poppet and is resistant to internal elastomer swelling that can disrupt performance. The new valve has been tested to exceed 500 million cycles in normal operating conditions, making it the longest-lived, most reliable product of its kind on the market.

ASCO has increased the valve’s flow rate by 12% to 15% over previous models, and the maximum operating pressure differential has been improved. “These factors will enable engineers to design products with greater operating speeds, higher pressures, and smaller volumes,” said Kemple.

The new valve family incorporates a smaller, lighter weight plastic body that achieves a 12% to 15% overall weight reduction when compared to stainless steel and brass-bodied valves. This makes the 411 Series a good choice for miniaturized and portable medical devices and pharmaceutical products. Lower power consumption means the valve also is attractive for use in battery-powered applications. In addition, it is the only miniature solenoid valve that is fully compliant with RoHS regulations.

“The 411 Series is assembled and tested in a specially built Class 100 cleanroom that is dedicated to miniature solenoid valve production,” Kemple said. “Our valve’s exceptional reliability and its flexibility to address a wide range of specifications and operating characteristics provide the OEM with the widest variety of design options.”

The 411 Series can be purchased from ASCO distributors or directly from the company. Many of the valve’s configurations are available through the ASCO Today 24-hour or ASCO 5-day shipping programs.

“Enrichment of Resequencing Targets for Analysis of Rare Variants”

Presented by RainDance Technologies

at the 11th Annual Advances in Genome Biology and Technology (AGBT) Meeting

Despite notable success in the identification of common variants using genome-wide association studies, these approaches often lack the resolution to identify a large portion of the total variation believed to contribute to disease. With an increased interest in understanding the contribution of variants with a range of frequency and effect, high-resolution methods such as targeted resequencing provide the opportunity to assay both common and rare variants in large cohort studies. In order to confidently detect rare variants, it is critical to obtain as complete coverage as possible for regions of interest.

RainDance Technologies has commercialized a platform to enable the most complete coverage of resequencing targets by leveraging the benefits of single-molecule PCR in a format that easily integrates into next-generation sequencing workflows. To explain the benefits of this approach, RainDance will hold an AGBT workshop, entitled “Enrichment of Resequencing Targets for Analysis of Rare Variants.”

The Sequence Enrichment application utilizes our RainStorm™ technology to manipulate picoliter volume droplets to generate more than two million independent PCR reactions per sample in a simple and robust process. The workshop will describe the use of this novel method for enrichment of resequencing targets with high efficiency resulting in the highest-quality data for analysis of rare variants in both coding and non-coding regions of the genome. In addition, the workshop will feature a preview of new applications from RainDance that include targeted methylation analysis and ultra-deep resequencing of heterogeneous samples.

By contrast, gas bags require that each consumable plastic bag be disposed of after a single use, and then processed as hazardous waste at considerable trouble and expense.

In the first year of operation, it probably saved us around $8,000 over gas bags,” said Frank Hollis of Hackensack Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey.

The valves are ideal for boilers, furnaces, ovens, heating equipment, gas generators, and kilns used in commercial and industrial applications.

“OEM design engineers can downsize their fuel trains by connecting two of our safety shut-off valves for an exceptionally small double valve footprint,” said Robert Kemple, executive vice president, sales and marketing, ASCO Numatics-Americas. “In addition, the valve’s very low pressure drop and extremely high flow capacity provide greater performance even in locations with low gas supply pressure.”

ASCO’s modular gas safety shut-off valves are available in two product families. The 8214(200) Series two-way normally closed solenoid valves can be used for fuel gases up to 5 psi. The V710(B)/AH(E) Series two-way normally closed electro-hydraulic actuated valves can be used with fuel gases up to 15 psi. This series is available with fast- and slow-opening constructions. Both product families come in 3/4’’ to 3’’ pipe sizes and have aluminum body constructions with pressure taps up and downstream.

“ASCO employed state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamic modeling and Finite Element Analysis to optimize the valves’ geometry,” said Kemple. “This gives the valves their exceptional efficiency in a package with high flow, small envelope dimensions, and compact, joinable construction. Now OEMs can design their products for space restrictive applications, and reduce customer installation and maintenance costs,” he said.

The 8214, V710, and AH Series valves can be purchased from ASCO distributors or directly from the company. Most products are available through either the ASCO Today Guaranteed Same-Day Shipping Program or the ASCO 5-Day Program. For more information, contact ASCO at 800-972-ASCO, by e-mail at info-valve@asco.com, or visit www.ascovalve.com.
