New White Paper Helps Medical Device Manufacturers Apply New FDA Regs to Combination Products
AGAWAM, MASS. – July 13, 2010 – A new free, white paper that guides medical device manufacturers in the complicated process of applying new U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations to combination products embedded with pharmaceutical or biologic components is now available from Microtest Laboratories (http://www.microtestlabs.com/combination-products-20/).
Combination products are a large and growing segment of the medical device market, with some analysts estimating they represent over 30% of all new product submissions to the FDA. As the market continues to grow, it is further compounded by the introduction of human tissue and cellular products (HCT/Ps) incorporated in combination products, which in turn, raise a host of new challenges for testing, sterilization, and contamination avoidance.
Over the past 12 months, the FDA has addressed the dichotomy of dual quality systems by developing streamlined regulations for Good Manufacturing Compliance. These regulations, designated as 21 CFR Part IV, are anticipated to become law by the end of 2010.
Once promulgated, manufacturers will be held accountable for compliance and the FDA will use it as a legal document for enforcement. In the new white paper titled, “Combination Products 2.0: Applying the New FDA Regulations,” Steven Richter, Ph.D, President and Chief Scientific Officer of Microtest Laboratories, Inc., addresses the implications for manufacturers. (Download from: http://www.microtestlabs.com/combination-products-20/). In the white paper, Dr. Richter discusses:
- The New Regulations
- Determining Principal Mode of Action — Device or Drug?
- Stem Cells & Human Tissue in Combination Products
- The Implications for Testing and Validation
- An Example: Drug-Eluting Stents
“The new FDA regulations governing combination products are a major step forward for the industry. They apply to parts of both the QSR and GMP quality systems in a way that makes sense for the unique characteristics of each combination product. 21 CFR Part IV closes the gaps in the 2004 guidelines and succinctly clarifies the process for establishing quality systems that ensure compliance and patient health and safety. The ability of manufacturers to understand, establish, implement reliable testing procedures will be critical in complying with these new requirements,” Dr. Richter said.
Download a free copy of “Combination Products 2.0: Applying the New FDA Regulations” from http://www.microtestlabs.com/combination-products-20/.
Dr. Richter founded Microtest in 1984 after a distinguished career at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Under his leadership, Microtest provides the medical device, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries with premier testing and manufacturing support.

New Partnership to Develop Next Generation of Intelligent Hearing Protection and Communication Technology for Offshore Energy Industry
TRONDHEIM, Norway ─ July 6, 2010 – International energy company Statoil has partnered with SINTEF, Scandinavia’s largest independent research organization, and Nacre, developers of award-winning intelligent hearing protection and communication technology, to create the next generation of intelligent hearing protection and communication technologies for use in the offshore oil and gas industry.
Noise-induced hearing loss is the world’s most prevalent and permanent occupational disease. Workers on offshore oil platforms and other extreme environments face the risk of not only permanent hearing loss from exposures to high levels of hazardous noise over extended periods of time, but also challenges in maintaining adequate levels of speech communication and situational awareness, which are essential to maintaining safety.
There are two main objectives to the Statoil/SINTEF/Nacre partnership:
• Develop new intelligent hearing protection technologies to eradicate noise-induced hearing loss among workers on offshore oil and gas platforms
• Establish new methods and solutions to facilitate reliable spoken communication and situational awareness in high-noise work environments.
“This project aligns well with Statoil’s commitment to preventing accidents and our goal of zero personal injuries on the job,” said Eli Aamot, Vice President for the research program at Statoil. “This is a very important step towards gaining full control of noise exposure for our workers on offshore platforms, and providing them with advanced hearing protection and communication solutions that will help keep them safe.”
The partnership will harness SINTEF and Nacre’s success in intelligent hearing protection and communication technologies, including the QUIETPRO® intelligent hearing system. QUIETPRO is deployed operationally around the globe, including U.S., NATO and Scandinavian armed forces.
“SINTEF is committed to technology for a better society, and has a rich history of scientific research and development of intelligent hearing protection and situational awareness solutions,” said Dr. Odd Kr. Pettersen, research director at SINTEF. “This partnership will help solve the challenge workers experience in extreme noise environments and protect them from hazardous noise in a more innovative way.”
“Nacre’s QUIETPRO has been successfully deployed in some of the harshest and most challenging noise environments worldwide,” said Chris Humphrey, Vice President and General Manager for Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC, consisting of Nacre and Howard Leight®. “We are delighted to be working with Statoil and SINTEF on this important project, and building upon the QUIETPRO hearing protection and communication platform to provide new and innovative hearing safety solutions for the Oil and Gas industry.”

VeriPRO from Howard Leight Wins Prestigious Industry Award for Innovation

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA, June 21 2010 – The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has awarded its Product Innovation Award to VeriPRO®, the earplug fit testing system from Howard Leight®. The award, which is designed to recognize excellence and innovation within the safety industry, was presented at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards Gala Dinner held during Safety and Health Expo 2010.
VeriPRO makes it easy to determine the Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) of a worker fitted with any earplugs through a simple listening test.
This allows both safety managers and workers to ascertain if the worker receives optimal protection from noise with their earplugs, requires additional training, or needs to try a different model.
“Hearing conservation is an area that we are passionate about,” said Josephine Audoin, Marketing Manager for Sperian Protection UK. “We are delighted that the genuine innovation demonstrated by VeriPRO has been recognized by the British safety community.”
A report recently issued by the UK Health and Safety Executive, entitled “Real World Use and Performance of Hearing Protection,” gave a positive indication about the availability of appropriate Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) in the UK. However, it also reported that “possibly
only 60% of workers supposedly using hearing protection are in fact protected.” One of the major reasons for this (and this applies particularly to ear plugs) is that the HPD is incorrectly fitted. Another concern for employers is the weakness of the published attenuation ratings system in regards to the specification of earplugs. The published attenuation ratings system only provides a theoretical level of hearing protection as opposed to an actual measurement of protection.
To help combat these issues, Howard Leight developed VeriPRO. VeriPRO benefits those that manage safety and employees alike. For the safety
professional, occupational health manager or site manager it fulfils European Directive 2003/10/EC requirements for training. For employees, VeriPRO demonstrates the importance of hearing protection in the workplace, and helps employees select and compare protectors to find the best choice for their ears and specific applications.
Unlike other field verification systems, VeriPRO can be used with any earplug, and the tests performed in virtually any setting. VeriPRO offers two test protocols. The Complete Check runs employees through five frequencies to determine PAR and is recommended for annual use. The Quick Check is a simplified test of earplug fit at one frequency, used as a fast and easy pass/fail check for more frequent use.
The VeriPRO system consists of PC-based software, an audiometrically optimized headset, audio processor, QuickStart guide and USB cable.

New White Paper Helps Medical Device Manufacturers Validate Cleaning Processes
AGAWAM, MASS. – June 2, 2010 – A new free, white paper that guides medical device manufacturers in the validation of their cleaning processes is now available from Microtest Laboratories.
As many medical devices are made of high-tech materials such as metallic alloys or synthetic plastics, manufacturers may require the use of various agents to aid in the manufacturing process, or produce contaminants that need to be removed. Thus, these products must be cleaned to ensure both patient safety and the continuing functionality of the device.
In a new white paper titled, “Five Steps to Validating the Cleaning Process of Medical Devices,” Patrick Kenny, Manager of Analytical Services at Microtest Laboratories, reviews medical device regulation under 21 CFR Part 820 – Quality System Regulation. (Download from: http://www.microtestlabs.com/cleaning-validation-paper.)
Several sections of Part 820 can be directly related to device cleanliness. For manufacturers, the challenge is to validate the cleaning process to ensure the devices are free of residue (chemical and particulate) in order to ensure patients are safe.
In the paper, Kenny presents a five-step process that provides a framework to assist medical device manufacturers in their cleaning validation efforts:
• #1: Evaluate the Process, Determine the Potential Contaminants
• #2: Determine the Limits
• #3: Identify the Analytical Test
• #4: Validate the Method for Use
• #5: Validate the Cleaning Process
Download a free copy of “Five Steps to Validating the Cleaning Process of Medical Devices,” from http://www.microtestlabs.com/cleaning-validation-paper.
At Microtest Labs, Kenny leads the services group performing medical device and pharmaceutical analytical testing for companies worldwide. He holds a M.S. degree in Chemistry and has spent the past 13 years working in QC, R&D and manufacturing laboratories.
