Advanced Instruments’ Anoxomat Mark II Anaerobic System Is Excellent Alternative to Anaerobic Chambers, Gas Bags in Clinical Laboratories

BOSTON, MASS., USA – June 2, 2008 – The Anoxomat™ Mark II anaerobic system for the cultivation of anaerobic, microaerophilic, and capnophilic bacteria is an excellent alternative to the use of anaerobic chambers and gas bags currently used in clinical laboratories. The Anoxomat Mark II automatic jar evacuation/replacement system is available from Spiral Biotech, Inc., a subsidiary of Advanced Instruments of Norwood, Massachusetts, USA.

“Because of the way the Anoxomat jar works, I can open it up, take out a sample, and make it anaerobic again very fast,” said Dr. Hannah Wexler of the VA Wadsworth Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The Anoxomat Mark II creates microaerophilic and anaerobic conditions quickly – delivering significant advantages for clinical laboratory managers. “Managers report that the Anoxomat delivers significant savings in terms of consumables, time, effort, and money versus anaerobic jars, anaerobic glove cabinets, or CO2 incubators,” said Anthony Pappas, National Sales Manager, Advanced Instruments.

Benefits of the Anoxomat Mark II system include:

  • Rapid achievement of anaerobic conditions, reaching anaerobiosis as quickly as one to three minutes as opposed to one to four hours for gas bags,
  • Repeatable environmental conditions, with gas mixtures remaining consistent within 0.5 percent of desired values,
  • Substantial cost-of-ownership savings versus the expense of consumables, pre-reduced media, and ongoing costs involved with chambers and gas bags,
  • “Walk-away convenience” and ease of use due to the Mark II’s new, intuitive software and touch-screen interface,
  • Automatic quality assurance programming features that ensure an airtight status, warn of pressure leaks, and bind any residual oxygen after evacuation cycling, and
  • Unmatched flexibility allowing users to take plates in and out of jars and return to anaerobic environments in minutes rather than hours.

The Anoxomat system is highly efficient and cost effective at cultivating pathogens and attaining growth performance that easily equals or exceeds that of chambers or gas bags.

“The Anoxomat was an easier operation…on gases alone, in the first year of operation, it probably saved us around $8,000,” said Frank Hollis of Hackensack Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Each Anoxomat cycle involves an evacuation phase, followed by replacement using an oxygen-free gas mixture. One cycle achieves 70% to 80% removal of the original atmosphere and gives a microaerophilic environment in one minute. Three cycles achieve an anaerobic atmosphere in less than 3 minutes.

A built-in quality assurance system checks for leaks before incubation. The system also checks whether the catalyst is capable of achieving the desired conditions and warns you if there’s a threat of gas failure.

The resulting gas mixture stays well within 0.5% of the desired value. This high precision, combined with the well-known reproducibility of these conditions, gives microbiologists a strong tool to draw accurate conclusions from repeated findings, Pappas said.

The Anoxomat Mark II Anaerobic System is immediately available from Spiral Biotech. For more information, reach Advanced Instruments or Spiral Biotech on the Web at http://www.aicompanies.com/, or by phone at (800) 554-1620 or +1 (781) 320-9000.

Advanced Instruments Acquires Mart Microbiology B.V.

NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS, USA, November 19, 2007 — Advanced Instruments, Inc., of Norwood, Massachusetts, announced today that it has acquired 100% of the shares of Mart Microbiology B.V. of The Netherlands. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Mart Microbiology manufactures and markets the Anoxomat™ line of instruments. These systems create custom environments for anaerobic bacteria cultivation, a process which requires oxygen-deprived atmospheres. Typical applications include the diagnosis of post-operative infection in hospitals and clinics, plus bacterial cultivation in food microbiology labs.

Anoxomat provides many advantages over traditional methods of cultivating anaerobes. The system can quickly create a precision anaerobic environment that enables reliable and rapid bacteria cultivation. It uses less lab space than traditional “glove box” cabinets and can provide typical returns on investment in less than one year.

Advanced Instruments has been the U.S. distributor of Anoxomat products for more than 6 years and has placed many systems at leading American medical centers. In addition, Mart products are sold in other global regions through an established factory-trained dealer network.

“Mart Microbiology is a perfect fit for our company,” said John Coughlin, President and CEO, Advanced Instruments. “It is the clear market leader in this developing technology and compliments our company’s market presence globally. The experience gained as Anoxomat’s U.S. distributor gives us a high degree of confidence in making this strategic move,” he said.

Advanced Instruments currently operates a facility in The Netherlands and the operations of Mart Microbiology will be integrated into that facility in early 2008.

EU Adopts Fluorimetric Method as Pasteurization Test Standard; Advanced Instruments’ Fluorophos® Test System Flourishes as International Reference

NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS, USA – April 23, 2007 – The new European Union (EU) standards regulating dairy pasteurization testing that go into effect on May 6th will not only benefit consumer safety throughout Europe, but further affirm Advanced Instruments’ Fluorophos® Test System as a true standard around the world.

On May 6, 2007, EU regulations adopt the Fluorimetric Method (ISO Standard 11816-1) as the new standard in assessing the correct pasteurization of milk, replacing the colorimetric methods used to measure Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) since the 1930’s. Other regulations increase the sensitivity requirements for ALP testing criteria to 350mU/L of phenol per liter from the previous level of 500mU/L. The tougher criteria bring EU requirements in line with the stricter testing controls already in place in the United States and other countries.

The implementation of the new EU regulations further solidifies the position of the Fluorophos® Test System – Advanced Instruments’ rapid, extremely sensitive fluorimetric method for assessing ALP – as a true international test reference standard for dairy quality and process control.

In addition to representing the new EU reference method status, the Fluorophos® Test System has been unanimously approved as a full international standard method by The International Dairy Federation (IDF 155), the International Standards Organisation, (ISO 11816), and the CEN European Standards Organisation. The Fluorophos® system is also approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the US Interstate Milk Shippers, and AOAC International.

“The Fluorophos® Test System is the world’s only 3-minute fluorimetric method with multiple international agency approvals,” said Ken Micciche, Director of Marketing, Advanced Instruments, Inc. (www.aicompanies.com).

The Fluorophos® Test System delivers accuracy over a range of ALP levels, including low values, for milk from cows (whole, semi-skimmed, skimmed and flavored) as well as from sheep and goats. The benefits of implementation include higher precision, reproducibility, and a ten-fold improvement in test sensitivity. The System also enables a significant improvement in troubleshooting capabilities by allowing immediate process validation following maintenance. This improves HACCP and food safety programs to protect consumers and continue manufacturing quality, consistent products.

“On May 6th, the European Union improves the accuracy and sensitivity of dairy testing throughout Europe, thus improving the safety of pasteurized milk and the health and well-being of all consumers,” Micciche said.

For more information, contact Micciche at Advanced Instruments, online at www.aicompanies.com/ai_products/alp/alp.htm, or by telephone +1-781-320-9000.

The Anoxomat is also fast and easy to use, makes the work process more flexible, and its built-in quality assurance guarantees reliable results, Pappas added.

Dr. Hanna Wexler of the VA Wadsworth Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif., said, “Because of the way the Anoxomat jar works, I can open it up, take out a sample, and make it anaerobic again very fast.”

Benefits of the Anoxomat Mark II system include:

  • Rapid achievement of anaerobic conditions, reaching anaerobiosis as quickly as one to three minutes as opposed to one to four hours for gas bags or chambers,
  • Repeatable environmental conditions, with gas mixtures remaining consistent within 0.5 percent of desired values,
  • Substantial cost-of-ownership savings versus the expense of consumables, pre-reduce media, and ongoing costs involved with chambers and gas bags,
  • Walk-away convenience” and ease of use due to the Mark II’s new, intuitive software and touch-screen interface,
  • Automatic quality assurance programming features that ensure an airtight status, warn of pressure leaks, and bind any residual oxygen after evacuation cycling, and
  • Unmatched flexibility allowing users to take plates in and out of jars and return to anaerobic environments in minutes rather than hours.

Anoxomat’s Excellence in Technology

The Anoxomat system is highly efficient and cost effective at cultivating pathogens and attaining growth performance that easily equals or exceeds that of chambers or gas bags.
