How to Achieve Effective Compliance with IEC 61508 in Selection of Solenoid Valves for Safety Systems is Subject of New White Paper from ASCO Numatics

Help for safety engineers to ensure effective compliance with IEC 61508 when selecting solenoid valves for safety systems is available in a new white paper available to download at http://goo.gl/VZaFnh from ASCO Numatics.

Regulatory modifications in 2010 have raised important issues in design and use of industrial safety systems. Certain changes in IEC 61508 — now being widely implemented — mean that designers and users who desire full compliance must give new consideration to topics such as SIL levels and the transition from 1H to 2H methodologies.

The new paper, “Effective Compliance with IEC 61508 When Selecting Solenoid Valves for Safety Systems,” discusses how these issues can impact users’ selection of solenoid valves and prepackaged redundant control systems (RCS) for implementation in a safety instrumented system (SIS). Topics include: Safety in process, Evolving standards, Evaluating solenoid valve redundancy and SIL, Evaluating routes 1H and 2H, and Evaluating suppliers and their ability to deal with such complex new compliance methodologies.

The issues discussed are especially applicable to the oil, gas, chemical, and power industries in applications such as safety shutdown systems, boilers, furnaces, high-integrity protection systems (HIPS), and more. They’re of concern to safety engineers and reliability engineers, as well as to process engineers, engineering executives, and plant managers.

Making the right choices in safety system planning and in valve supplier selection can affect design time, costs, and effort — as well as the safety of the plant itself, the paper notes.

Download the free whitepaper, “Effective Compliance with IEC 61508 When Selecting Solenoid Valves for Safety Systems, at http://goo.gl/VZaFnhfrom ASCO Numatics, the worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of quality solenoid valves.

ASCO Numatics Introduces Numatics 501 Series Directional Control Valve; Features High Flow in Compact Package

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., August 26, 2014 — ASCO Numatics has introduced its Numatics 501 Series directional control valve. The general purpose automation valve is designed for directional control and piloting applications requiring compact size, high flow capability, and energy savings.

“Our new 501 Series valve delivers up to two times greater flow than previous models,” said Robert W. Kemple, Jr., executive vice president, sales and marketing – Americas, ASCO Numatics. “Now, engineers can achieve the flow of a 15 mm to 20 mm valve in a more compact package, saving space, cost, and energy in their machine designs. In addition, no other valve in its class offers such a broad range of pressure regulator, pressure shut-off, and exhaust flow control accessories,” Kemple said.

The pressure shut-off option permits users to replace individual valves without stopping their production process — reducing line downtime and maintenance. The combination of the pressure regulator and the Numasizing® engineering tool can dramatically minimize air and energy consumption. The valve’s modular design also permits easy configuration and modification.

The new sub-base mounted valve is well suited for in-panel valve piloting applications. Its high flow rate, compact size, and optional mounting plate enable efficient use of cabinet space. A dual three-way version enables the placement of two, three-way valves in the space of a four-way valve.

New 580 Electronics Platform Features Fieldbus Networking

ASCO Numatics also has introduced an affordable electronics platform for the Numatics 501/503 Series valves. This new 580node platform allows the use of a fieldbus network to control the valve manifold. Its compact footprint makes it highly functional for in-panel environments. The 580 platform incorporates a plain-language digital display and diagnostics that indicate status for easy configuration and commissioning.

The 501 Series directional control valve and 580 electronics platform are ideal for applications in the life science, food and beverage, high-technology, and light packaging equipment industries.

Eight Critical Factors in Purchasing Offshore Pilot Valves Are Detailed in New White Paper from ASCO Numatics

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — March 5, 2012 — The evaluation and selection of stainless steel pilot valves — which play small but critical roles in the control of offshore platforms and other demanding oil and gas production operations — is the subject of a new white paper available for download at http://goo.gl/U3BgC.

Titled “Eight Critical Factors in Purchasing Offshore Pilot Valves,” the white paper guides panel builders, assemblers, OEMs, contractors, and operators as they consider the factors that bear on a given design’s reliability. The valves, which act as pilots for process and larger emergency shutdown (ESD) valves, are typically installed in a platform’s pneumatic logic control panels.

The April 2010 platform loss and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have dramatically sharpened the industry’s focus on reliability and related issues. In the case of pilot valves, this means that operators must have robust valves that perform efficiently each time, every time.

The white paper considers several problems that interfere with the efficient, reliable performance of conventional pilot valves in offshore use. It also highlights design changes that have addressed these problems in newer models.

Download the new white paper, “Eight Critical Factors in Purchasing Offshore Pilot Valves,” from http://goo.gl/U3BgC.
