EH&E / Consumer Product Safety Commission Study Links Chinese Drywall to Corrosion in Homes

Needham, Mass. – November 24, 2009 – Environmental Health & Engineering Inc. (EH&E), a leading Massachusetts-based engineering consulting firm, has completed a major indoor air quality study for the U.S. government which found a strong association between the presence of Chinese drywall, low level concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, and corrosion of metals in homes. The drywall issue has affected thousands of homes in the United States for more than two years.

The five-month EH&E study included 51 homes in five southern states; 41 homes where property owners had reported corrosion of wiring or piping, and ten similar homes about which no complaints had been filed. The following findings were presented by John F. McCarthy, Sc.D., C.I.H., president of EH&E, in a Congressional briefing at the U.S. Capital on Monday, November 23, 2009:

· In homes with suspect drywall, the following conditions were determined:

o High rates of sulfur-based corrosion on copper and silver test coupons.

o Visible corrosion of copper wires in electrical outlets.

o Low level concentrations of hydrogen sulfide gas.

o Low ventilation rates.

o Associations of corrosion with hydrogen sulfide concentrations in air, temperature and humidity.

· A reliable real-time method of “fingerprinting” suspect drywall using state-of-the-art inspection equipment was developed and validated.

The EH&E presentation to Congress and report prepared for the Consumer Product Safety Commission are available for review at this website: http://www.eheinc.com/cpsc_drywall.htm.

EH&E was selected for the project based on its high level of building science expertise and field experience in characterizing complex indoor environments and in homes, schools, and offices.  The company had been the prime contractor for indoor air quality to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and two of its principals, John D. Spengler, Ph.D., and John F. McCarthy, Sc.D., C.I.H., edited what is considered the most comprehensive guide available today on indoor air quality, the “Indoor Air Quality Handbook”.

EH&E Awarded Consumer Product Safety Commission Contract to Evaluate Homes Containing Chinese Drywall

Needham, Mass. – July 28, 2009Environmental Health & Engineering (EH&E), Inc., a leading Massachusetts-based environmental and engineering consulting firm, has been contracted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to study the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in homes built using Chinese drywall. The study will compare findings in 35 homes built using Chinese drywall with 15 “control” homes.

The drywall was imported into the United States earlier this decade due to a domestic shortage caused by a housing boom and construction following a series of hurricanes that struck the southeastern United States. It has been found that the drywall has high amounts of sulfur compounds, which are causing homeowners to experience foul odors, corrosion of electrical equipment and a host of health problems.

EH&E was selected for the project based on its’ high level of expertise and field experience in characterizing complex indoor environments. The company had been the prime contractor for IAQ to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and two of its principals, John D. Spengler, Ph.D. and John F. McCarthy, Sc.D., C.I.H., edited what is considered the most comprehensive guide available today on indoor air quality, the Indoor Air Quality Handbook.

“We’re very pleased to have been selected for this important study,” said McCarthy, President of EH&E. “Our team of dedicated professionals has the right experience in chamber simulations, advanced analytical assessment, data interpretation and comparative risk assessment to contribute to a clear understanding of the potential risks associated with these products”.

EH&E expects to work throughout the summer and complete the study in the fall of 2009.

EH&E Authors World Health Organization (WHO) Chemical Incidents Manual

Needham, Mass. – July 14, 2009 Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. (EH&E) served as the primary author of a recently released World Health Organization (WHO) manual entitled: The Public Health Management of Chemical Incidents. The complete manual is available at http://ow.ly/ha77.

WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support, and monitoring and assessing health trends. The purpose of this manual is to provide a comprehensive overview of the principles and roles of public health in the management of chemical incidents and emergencies.

EH&E was asked to prepare this manual based upon its extensive experience in public health, trends in environmental risk, and management of health and safety programs for large institutions. The document covers the key aspects of an incident management plan from the perspective of public health using risk assessment as a unifying theme. Guiding principles for prevention, preparedness, detection and alert, response, and recovery of chemical incidents are detailed in the manual.

“The management of chemical incidents and emergencies requires a multi-disciplinary approach, and the public health sector plays a key role at various stages of the management process,” said David MacIntosh, Sc.D., a contributing author and Principal Scientist with EH&E.   “In this manual, we’ve utilized the risk assessment paradigm to help government and other stakeholders identify and prioritize the role of the public health sector, with the goal of preventing and mitigating the health consequences of chemical incidents and emergencies.”

WHO, EH&E, and all those involved in the development of the publication hope that the manual will have wide application, especially in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, and that in the future the health sector will be better prepared to acknowledge and fulfill its roles and responsibilities in the management of chemical incidents and emergencies.

EH&E Partners with Goucher College to Undertake Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory

Needham, Mass. – June 4, 2009- Environmental Health & Engineering (EH&E), Inc., a leading Massachusetts-based environmental and engineering consulting firm, recently partnered with Goucher College (Baltimore, MD) to complete a greenhouse gas emissions inventory as required by the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.

The commitment requires participating colleges and universities to complete an inventory of all their greenhouse gas emissions. The college or university must also develop a Climate Action Plan for becoming “climate neutral”, reducing or offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions associated with campus operations

“EH&E worked closely with Goucher’s administration to gather the necessary data to complete the greenhouse gas emissions inventory,” said Michael Crowley, M.S., LEED AP, Pathways to Campus Sustainability Program Manager at EH&E.

“As part of the effort EH&E examined the college’s energy consumption; its direct emissions, which include stationary, mobile, and fugitive greenhouse gas emissions; and indirect emissions, which includes purchased energy; commuting, air travel, waste disposal, contractor operations, and purchased goods and services. EH&E additionally examined the college’s composting practices, as well as its purchase of carbon offsets and/or Renewable Energy Certificates,” he said.

The greenhouse gas inventory effort will provide the necessary benchmark for development of a Climate Action Plan, or detailed program for carbon reduction.

Goucher’s (http://www.goucher.edu) commitment to environmental sustainability is a key component of the college’s most recent strategic plan.

EH&E Wins 2009 Green Business Award for Energy-Saving Improvements to its Workplace

Needham, Massachusetts – May 5, 2009Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. (EH&E, Inc.) has been named as a 2009 Green Business Awards winner by the Boston Business Journal (BBJ) for energy-saving improvements the firm made to its offices in Needham, Mass. The improvements reduced the company’s energy consumption by 20% and qualified its workspace as an Energy Star Building.

The firm, which provides a broad range of environmental and engineering consulting services to businesses, healthcare organizations, and educational institutions, achieved the award honor by practicing what its experts prescribe for their own clients.

“By applying targeted construction inspections and several key (yet minor) heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) modifications, we were able to achieve an Energy Star Target Finder rating of 75%,” said John F. McCarthy, Sc.D., C.I.H., President, EH&E, Inc.

The rating means that EH&E now uses 25% less energy than the median office space in its geographic area.

“The achievement is noteworthy because it illustrates the significant impact that even small or mid-sized companies can have on their carbon footprint using conventional designs and equipment,” McCarthy noted.

The BBJ’s Green Business Awards honor some of the most innovative and effective leaders advancing “green” policies in Greater Boston. EH&E won its award in the Workplace category. All of the winners will be recognized at the BBJ’s second annual Green Business Summit on May 15, 2009 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel.

White Paper Helps Building Owners Minimize Risks and Costs Associated with PCBs in Construction Materials

Needham, Mass. – April 21, 2009 – A new, free white paper can help building owners, developers, and others minimize the very real risks and costs caused by the discovery of PCBs in their construction materials.

The paper titled “What You Need to Know About Managing PCBs in Construction Materials — An Emerging Environmental Issue” details the potential liabilities and current risk management strategies for dealing with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in construction materials.

“PCB-containing building materials represent a newly discovered and significant liability for building owners, real estate developers, REITS, financing institutions, and contractors, “says John McCarthy, President and co-founder of EH&E Inc., a Needham, Mass.-based environmental services consulting firm.

“The regulation-driven remediation efforts can dramatically impact the cost of renovation or demolition, quickly costing millions of dollars for a single, large-scale project. Public and private owners of real estate must be aware of the regulatory requirements and legal implications. They must have strategies ready to implement to effectively minimize their construction risk and remediation costs,” he said.

The discovery of PCBs in building materials generally occurs once a project has been contracted, resulting in costly project change orders that significantly impact the construction schedule and project costs.

This white paper details a proactive strategy to avoid regulatory mishaps, maintain a safe and healthful building, and accurately assess the need for and costs of any required remediation efforts prior to construction so that these costs can be predicted and minimized in the project budget.
