New Howard Leight MAX Small Earplugs Maximize Hearing Protection and Comfort for People with Smaller Ear Canals

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA – November 1, 2011 — Honeywell Safety Products today introduced MAX® Small earplugs — an extension to the flagship Howard Leight® MAX single-use earplug family. MAX Small’s reduced size offers people with smaller ear canals a more comfortable fit and high attenuation (NRR 30).

MAX Small has the same bell shape and patented varied-cell polyurethane foam as the standard MAX earplug, though is 20% smaller in geometry.

Through customer feedback and evaluations with Howard Leight’s VeriPRO® ear plug fit testing system, employees with smaller ear canals have reported trouble obtaining a good fit – and adequate protection – from other high attenuating roll-down foam earplugs on the market.

“The right ear plug should feel comfortable in the ear canal without compromising protection. MAX Small meets that need by ensuring a high level of attenuation and a more comfortable fit as in a single-use foam earplug,” said Renee S. Bessette, COHC, Global Brand Manager, Howard Leight / Honeywell Safety Products.

In end-user trials involving automobile manufacturing workers and safety inspectors, individuals with smaller ear canals have reported achieving a better in-ear fit — and attained higher attention — with MAX Small earplugs than with the use of larger single-use earplugs.

MAX Small is available in both corded and uncorded models, and is available immediately from industrial safety distributors in the US and Canada.

Howard Leight / Sperian Hearing Protection Experts to Present at National Hearing Conservation Association Conference

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, U.S.A. — February 15, 2010— Hearing conservation experts from Howard Leight / Sperian Hearing Protection will be presenters at the 2010 National Hearing Conservation Association’s (NHCA) Conference, February 25-27, 2010, in Orlando, Fla.

Brad K. Witt, Director of Hearing Conservation, and Dr. Theresa Y. Schulz, Lt. Col., USAF (ret), CPS/A, Hearing Conservation Manager, both of Howard Leight/Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC will participate in two key workshops at the NHCA’s “Explore the World of Hearing Loss Prevention” Conference.

“Howard Leight has always been dedicated to the prevention of occupational hearing loss,” Renee Bessette, COHC, Marketing Manager, Howard Leight/Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC said. “We are a proud member of NHCA and are pleased to share our knowledge, experience and best practices in hearing loss prevention with this audience.”

The workshops are:

  • Hands-on fit-testing,” Thursday, Feb. 25. As part of the full-day workshop focusing on the world’s leading fit-testing technologies available to the hearing conservation professional, Witt will present details of Howard Leight’s new VeriPRO® technology that enables safety managers to ensure their employees are getting the most out of their hearing protection devices. The VeriPRO system measures real-world attenuation of unmodified earplugs and can be used as a means to improve individual employee training and enhance the overall effectiveness of hearing conservation programs. Hands-on demonstrations of all available technologies will follow in the afternoon.

  • Hearing loss prevention: The basics/Hearing Protective Devices”, Thursday, Feb. 25. Presented by Dr. Schulz, this section of “The Basics” workshop will focus on hearing protector function, how hearing protection devices (HPDs) are tested and rated (with particular reference to the Noise Reduction Rating), and the performance gains available from the use of dual hearing protection.

“Hearing conservationists can measure, assess, document, and counsel, but when it comes to effective intervention, our primary and sometimes only tool, is a hearing protector. We all must become more knowledgeable about the specification of hearing protection devices and their use in our hearing conservation programs,” Dr. Schulz said.

Motivating Workers to be Ear-Responsible

hearforever_final-logo-332“Da be way oo roec your hearing rom haardu noi eboer i oo onidindly oo hearing roecer around loud noi.”

These may seem like nonsense words to a reader, but this is what normal speech and conversation may sound like to an employee who lives with noise-induced hearing loss. (*For a translation, see the end of our article linked below.)

Safety professionals know the hazards of loud noise, but how can we convey that risk awareness to workers, and motivate them to take personal and pro-active actions? Read any Hearing Conservation regulation cover to cover, and the word motivation never appears. But the safety-savvy employer will know that motivation is the keystone to preventing noise-induced hearing loss. Motivated employees take responsibility for protecting their hearing both on- and off-the-job, rather than just viewing hearing protectors as a workplace compliance issue.

Read more for three tools used in successful Hearing Conservation Programs for instilling the risk awareness that motivates workers to take action to conserve their own hearing:  http://www.hearforever.org/tools-to-educate/motivating-workers-to-be-ear-responsible
