National Hearing Conservation Association Receives Award in Class Action Suit

Westminster, CO  December 16, 2013 – The National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA) was the recipient of a cy pres award as a part of the settlement of a class action suit against Motorola and other Bluetooth manufacturers. A cy pres award is a dollar amount awarded to a non-profit organization which furthers the interests of those damaged by the possible wrong doing.  The NHCA was selected as a recipient due to wide-spread recognition of its long-standing mission of preventing noise-induced and other avoidable hearing loss in all sectors of society.

Although no admissions of guilt were made or implied, these manufacturers settled claims against them for violating rules and regulations which were in place to protect the hearing of consumers.  Specifically, the lawsuit claimed that consistent spikes in decibel levels, in conjunction with long term use of Bluetooth headsets could cause temporary and permanent hearing damage.  The claims alleged further that no warnings were properly made to alert consumers that their hearing was at risk.  The settlement requires all Bluetooth manufacturers to place visible warnings in the proper instruction books to alert users of the potential risks.

Evan Nass, Esq., lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, selected the NHCA as the recipient for the cy pres award, due to the organization’s “unyielding advocacy for the prevention of hearing loss.”  “Our hearing is a precious commodity.  The NHCA serves as a tireless guardian for this sense, which is too often ignored or neglected by society.”

The award will be utilized by the NHCA Scholarship Foundation to foster research and encourage student involvement in hearing loss prevention, and by the NHCA to further its efforts to prevent hearing loss.  These efforts include an annual conference, publication of new research in hearing loss prevention in The International Journal of Audiology, and outreach to both affiliated professions and the general public.

According to NHCA President Jennifer Tufts, “NHCA is a small organization with big ideas and a big mission.  With the cy pres award, we can put more of our ideas into action.  We are very grateful to Mr. Nass for selecting NHCA as the recipient of this award.”

Honeywell Experts Host Free Hearing Conservation Seminars in British Columbia to Help Prevent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Sept. 9 2013 — Noise-induced hearing loss might well be the world’s most common, and preventable, occupational injury. Hearing conservation experts from Honeywell (NYSE: HON) will host free hearing conservation seminars in two cities in British Columbia, Canada— Prince George on Sept. 30 and Kamloops on Oct. 2 — to show how, with the proper education, motivation, and protection, it can also be 100% preventable.

Titled “Howard Leight® HearForever: Best Practices in Effective Hearing Conservation,” the half-day, morning seminars will help safety professionals improve their workplace hearing conservation programs with practical information on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), and the latest research and technologies.

The seminars are approved for continuing education credit by the ABIH (American Board of Industrial Hygiene). Topics will include:

The new Sync Digital AM/FM Radio, Sync Hi-Vis AM/FM Radio, and Sync Electo® combine hearing protection, high-fidelity sound, and the ability for individuals to listen to the radio or personal listening devices safely at work and at home.

National Hearing Conservation Association Recognizes Laurie Wells, Au.D., With Prestigious Michael Beall Threadgill Award

Westminster, CO ― March 6, 2012 ― Laurie Wells, Au.D., Manager of Audiology for Associates in Acoustics, Inc., received the Michael Beall Threadgill Award during a ceremony at the annual conference of the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA). This award, established in 1985, recognizes an individual whose committed leadership and insight has furthered the NHCA’s mission of preventing hearing loss from environmental factors in all sectors of society.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Wells has been strong proponent of hearing conservation, both within and beyond the NHCA. Dr. Wells has represented the American Academy of Audiology on the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) since 2007; currently, she is the Vice-Chair of Education for CAOHC. She has provided occupational audiology services to local employers while employed at the University of Northern Colorado Speech-Pathology and Audiology Clinic. Her efforts are by no means confined to the United States: she has provided hearing conservation education and implementation in Belgium, China, Czech Republic, France, Hungary, India, Spain and the West Indies.

In 1999, Dr. Wells accepted the role of Secretary on the NHCA Executive Council; she remained on the council for the next seven years, serving as Vice-President, President-Elect, President, and finally Past President in 2007. During this time she planned and participated in multiple NHCA Excellence Seminars, acted as Program Chair for two consecutive conferences, contributed to and served as Associate Editor for the NHCA Spectrum, and served on multiple task forces within NHCA.

“Dr. Wells has selflessly donated her time and energy to our organization, and to the cause of hearing loss prevention. She exemplifies the ideals of the NHCA with her dedication,” said Laura Kauth, NHCA President and Chair of the Nominations Task Force.

Dr. Wells was also recognized as the 2011 Outstanding Lecturer for her thought-provoking presentation at the 2011 conference, titled “From Here to There to Hear”.

New Howard Leight MAX Small Earplugs Maximize Hearing Protection and Comfort for People with Smaller Ear Canals

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA – November 1, 2011 — Honeywell Safety Products today introduced MAX® Small earplugs — an extension to the flagship Howard Leight® MAX single-use earplug family. MAX Small’s reduced size offers people with smaller ear canals a more comfortable fit and high attenuation (NRR 30).

MAX Small has the same bell shape and patented varied-cell polyurethane foam as the standard MAX earplug, though is 20% smaller in geometry.

Through customer feedback and evaluations with Howard Leight’s VeriPRO® ear plug fit testing system, employees with smaller ear canals have reported trouble obtaining a good fit – and adequate protection – from other high attenuating roll-down foam earplugs on the market.
