New Technologies in Liquid Filtration are Focus of Technical Presentations at 2012 AFS Conference

EAST WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS, USA — May 16, 2012 — Attendees at the 2012 AFS Annual Conference will learn about the application of new and complex composite technologies used in liquid filtration during two technical presentations by Hollingsworth & Vose (H&V), a global leader in the supply of technically advanced nonwovens for engine, high efficiency, and liquid filtration.

Introduction to NANOWEB® Materials and Application in Liquid Filtration” will be presented at the conference’s Latest & Best I session on June 6th at 2:34 p.m. The session will include study findings on the filtration properties of a polypropylene-based NANOWEB Advanced Nanofiber Technology. The study researched NANOWEB media performance including fractional efficiency, water flux, and dirt holding capacity versus some standard phase-inversion polymeric membranes.

Recently introduced by Hollingsworth & Vose, the NANOWEB technology platform features a new type of microporous fibrous membrane. The membrane structure is predominantly composed of randomly packed polymeric nanofibers that create a highly voided and interconnected network. The chemical and mechanical robustness of the nano-nonwoven material is dependent on the choice of polymers, basis weight and some proprietary processing methods.

The presenter, Jack Manns, is Director of Marketing Specialty and Liquid Filtration Products, HESF Division, H&V. Manns has more than 30 years of experience in the filtration and nonwovens industry, including 24 years at H&V in various marketing positions related to both air and liquid filtration applications.

“Complex Composites in Liquid Filtration” will be presented at the conference’s Latest & Best II session on June 6th at 4:41 p.m. Complex composite media, developed by combining and optimizing different processes and materials into a single media, are changing the engine and industrial fluid filtration market segment.

At H&V, in one example, two main processes — wetlaid structures and microporous fibrous membranes — are being combined in new ways. Nano fibers in a variety of materials, ranging from 60 to 700 nanometers, are combined with larger wetlaid bases consisting of glass, synthetic and/or cellulosic fibers. The resulting composite is a new, single media with capabilities for diverse liquid fluid applications well beyond either non-woven by itself.

The presenter, Andrew Shepard, is the Global Director of Marketing, Engine and Industrial Division, H&V. Shepard has more than 20 years of experience in the automotive and powertrain industry, working on new product development, engineering, design, management consulting and product management.

H&V Introduces Capaceon Filter Media for Automotive and Heavy Duty Air Applications

EAST WALPOLE, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A. November 18, 2009 — Hollingsworth & Vose (H&V) today introduced Capaceonfilter media, a new line of products for automotive and heavy duty air applications that offers 10% to 30% greater dust-holding capacity.

“Capaceon represents an entirely new category of filtration media that breaks the link between performance and basis weight,” said David von Loesecke, Vice President and General Manager of H&V’s Engine and Industrial Filtration business unit. ”Its capability to deliver significantly higher dust-holding capacity while achieving the same or higher levels of efficiency means manufacturers can optimize filter designs either for long life or for reduced media usage in a smaller filter.”

In automotive applications, Capaceon filter media offers improvements in initial efficiency across all basis weights — which extend from 78 pounds to 95 pounds per 3,000 square feet. It combines unprecedented service life with the industry’s greatest water and smolder resistance. In addition, the media is treated with solvent-based phenolic resins. This provides superior water resistance in panel air filter designs and also will not require a post-pleating curing process. “These capabilities help support manufacturers’ ‘green’ initiatives by saving energy and producing very low media emissions during processing,” said von Loesecke.

In heavy duty air use, Capaceon’s benefits focus on increased filter lifetime and higher dust-holding capacity. It achieves a higher level of engine protection from contaminants in the harshest environments. “Capaceon heavy duty air filter media is treated with a modified acrylic resin system that is pre-cured during the manufacturing process to optimize strength and moisture resistance,” von Loesecke said.

Capaceon filter media was designed specifically for application across an extensive range of original equipment and aftermarket requirements. The material is now available for manufacture and shipment to customer locations.

ViaMat Nonwoven Aramid Paper Improves Dimensional Stability, Enables Higher Interconnect Densities in Electronic Packaging Applications

H&V Introduces NANOWEB® Advanced Nanofiber Technology for Air Filtration, Liquid Filtration, and Performance Barrier Nonwoven Applications

EAST WALPOLE, MASS. – December 10, 2008 – Hollingsworth & Vose Company (H&V), a leading supplier of engineered papers and nonwovens, has introduced its NANOWEB® Advanced Nanofiber Technology. Developed with H&V’s HVision(TM) technology platform, the material sets a new performance standard for a broad array of air filtration media, liquid filtration media, and performance barrier nonwoven applications.

“H&V’s new NANOWEB technology provides a microporous structure with unparalleled process control and durability. The fiber diameter distribution and layer thickness can be formulated to deliver greater performance across many applications,” said David von Loesecke, Vice President and General Manager of H&V’s Engine & Industrial Filtration.

NANOWEB fibers typically range from 0.3 to 0.5 microns in size, but can be increased up to 1 micron. The nanofiber layer can have a thickness ranging from 15 to 30 microns. A second layer can be applied with a similar or different polymer.

NANOWEB media can be supplied as a coating to any nonwoven base, including glass, cellulose, or synthetic fibers – or as a standalone substrate. When supplied as a standalone substrate, NANOWEB media has a thickness of 100 to 200 microns.

The potential applications of NANOWEB technology are virtually unlimited:

  • Air Filter Media – NANOWEB technology can greatly improve the performance of filter media’s ability to remove particulates from air streams. It can be incorporated in a variety of applications, including dust collectors, gas turbines, motorized vehicle cabins, computer disk drives, HVAC, and high-efficiency filtration. Its strong nanofiber layer adhesion also makes the technology ideal for pulse-cleaning applications.
  • Liquid Filter Media – NANOWEB media’s synthetic composition delivers improved efficiency and a more durable nanofiber option for fuel and lube filtration. NANOWEB technology also meets the advanced microfiltration needs of RO and UF membrane prefiltration in liquid service applications such as life sciences, food and beverage, and process liquid filtration. H&V’s NANOWEB technology offers an average of 40% higher porosity for a given micron rating when compared to standard product offerings.
  • Performance Barrier Nonwoven – The microporous structure created with H&V’s NANOWEB technology is ideal for enhancing the insulative and barrier properties of many high-performance barrier applications, including thermal or acoustical insulation, hypoallergenic bedding, waterproof breathable fabrics, and energy storage.“H&V’s new NANOWEB Advanced Nanofiber Technology is highly customizable and offers improved material processability and longer life,” said von Loesecke. “It has superior chemical compatibility with no extractables or leachables, achieves advanced efficiency for greater performance with total cost reduction, and increases energy savings.”The HVision technology platform is a collaborative process designed to enhance the development and commercialization of breakthrough materials that exceed present industry performance benchmarks.
