Invensys introduces new wireless-enabled enterprise solutions and expanded implementation and support capabilities

FOXBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, USA – June 6, 2007Invensys Process Systems today announced seven new wireless-enabled solutions and expanded global network implementation and support capabilities. These wireless-enabled solutions can be deployed at both the plant and enterprise levels to help improve overall industrial asset performance management.

“Since introducing Invensys’ comprehensive managed network approach to industrial wireless technology back in 2005, we’ve been working closely with our customers to define and implement the specific applications where wireless technology can provide the most value,” commented Hesh Kagan, strategic technology director at Invensys Process Systems. “When doing so, we’ve been careful to consider not just the initial cost-savings and long-term benefits that wireless-enabled solutions can deliver, but also the potentially higher support costs of wireless vs. wired networks, and how these support costs can be minimized through proper up-front engineering and long-term network monitoring and optimization services.”

Invensys’ expanding portfolio of fully engineered and supported wireless-enabled asset performance management solutions is both vendor-independent and standards-agnostic. The following solutions can operate in conjunction with most vendors’ products, systems, or software applications, using the most appropriate wireless standards available:

  • Mobile Workforce – provides employees in the field with secure roaming access to real-time control systems, enterprise applications, documents, and other information via wireless hand-held devices and hardened Mil Spec and NEMA 4-rated tablet personal computers
  • Field Data Logging – enables personnel to quickly and accurately upload device and equipment status and diagnostic data to maintenance systems from the field
  • Condition Monitoring – wireless connection to remote sensors provides incremental measurements (tank levels, temperatures, pH, vibration, etc.) to provide a richer real-time data base to support highly effective model-based predictive maintenance strategies. Integrates with Invensys’ InFusion Condition Manager, Avantis EAM, and third-party computerized maintenance management programs
  • Asset Tracking – uses RFID technology to provide accurate identification and location of fixed and rolling assets with optional visualization on a hand-held device. Supports E-pedigree asset tracking for Life Sciences
  • Physical Security – provides flexibility to implement any combination of mobile video, fixed surveillance cameras (with or without access controls), intrusion detectors, and proximity sensors as required to cost-effectively extend the reach of physical security throughout a single building, a plant, an entire complex, or even a series of complexes. Establishes a framework for regulatory compliance
  • Personnel Safety – provides practical and cost-effective means to accurately identify physical location of personnel in real time, notify first responders of safety shower activation, provide “man-down” notification for emergency services, and remote evacuation alarming. Helps safeguard employees and visitors and ease compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Communications – provides secure integration of multiple wireless technologies (including both VoIP and high-speed backhaul communications) to cost-effectively connect people, facilities, and systems. Standards-compliant solution set integrates with existing IT infrastructure and systems

Invensys wireless-enabled applications are in various stages of implementation at customer plants around the world. This includes a large chemical complex on the US Gulf Coast, petroleum refineries in the US and Europe, and several US power plants. Invensys is also building wireless solution implementation capabilities for offshore production platforms and large scale mining operations.

Invensys’ rapidly expanding Enterprise Networking and Security Practice includes highly experienced IT and automation professionals based around the world and utilizes a proven Assess/Design/Implement/Manage lifecycle methodology to deliver consistent, measurable results for all performance services.

“While wireless networking technology offers tremendous potential for providing incremental performance improvements in today’s industrial enterprises, it clearly is not for the faint of heart,” said Cory Welch, Practice Director, Enterprise Network and Security Services at Invensys Process Systems. “Not only must users deal with the issues of incomplete and conflicting wireless standards, multiple – and not necessarily interoperable – vendor products, proprietary protocols, and both reliability and security issues, they also have to deal with the fact that the appropriate expertise is not always available in depth within their own organizations. It’s precisely for this reason that Invensys has been working so hard to build up our global Enterprise Networking and Security Services practice to be able to supplement our customers’ IT and automation resources with world-class value added services expertise. Today, I can say without hesitation that Invensys is in an excellent position to help our customers identify, implement, and support our new wireless-enabled and other enterprise networking solutions anywhere in the world.”

Foxboro announces HART-enabled I/A Series plug-in migration solution for TDC 2000 control systems

– Honeywell TDC 2000 system users can now upgrade to advanced Invensys automation technology – including full HART support – without touching their existing field wiring

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS USA (Foxboro User Group Conference) – July 16, 2007 – The Foxboro Automation (http://www.foxboro.com/) unit of Invensys Process Systems, today announced that it has extended its popular family of “plug in” DCS migration modules with a new generation of Honeywell migration products. These new modules enable Honeywell users to upgrade their aging TDC 2000 systems to the latest I/A Series automation technology and modern HART field communications without having to replace existing field wiring, termination assemblies, system enclosures, or power supplies.

The new I/A Series migration modules are an exact physical replacement for the existing TDC 2000 input/output (I/O) modules and plug right into the existing system enclosures with no I/O mapping issues. This migration approach is more cost-effective than a complete system replacement and – with careful upfront planning – reduces associated process downtime from weeks or even months, to a day or less. This can dramatically minimize lost production.

“In addition to providing a well-proven approach for upgrading obsolete control systems to the latest I/A Series process control, HMI, asset management, and real-time information capabilities and our award-winning mesh control network backbone, our new plug-in migration modules for TDC 2000 systems provide additional new functionality through support for both conventional 4 to 20 mA and HART digital field communications. This provides users with the option to selectively upgrade their field instrumentation to the latest HART devices at any time,” said Betty Naylor-McDevitt, marketing director of the Foxboro Automation unit of Invensys Process Systems.

According to Rod Wetsch, Project Manager at the Dakota Gasification Great Plains Synfuels Plant located in Beulah, North Dakota, which is well along in a five-year modernization program under which the legacy Honeywell and Bailey control systems are being gradually migrated to advanced I/A Series automation technology, “The Foxboro plug-in migration modules saved us an enormous number of man hours and minimized our downtime. The new HART functionality is important to us because we can now pull all the information from our HART field devices into our plantwide I/A Series control system for diagnostics and maintenance, something that was not possible with our old systems.”

Using this well-proven plug in migration approach, Invensys has already helped more than 500 customers around the world upgrade their legacy Honeywell TDC2000 and TDC3000, Bailey NET 90 and INFI 90, Fisher PROVOX S10 and S20, Westinghouse WDPF, Siemens Moore APACS, and Foxboro SPECTRUM and SPEC 200 systems to advanced Foxboro I/A Series technology.

For more information on the new I/A Series plug in migration modules for Honeywell TDC or other legacy systems, readers can contact their local Foxboro Automation representative, call the Invensys Customer Satisfaction Center toll-free at 866-746-6477 (508-549-2424 outside the U.S. and Canada), or visit www.foxboro.com/migration.
