Franklin, Mass. – September 23, 2008 – Liko North America has announced the launch of a new “Nursing School” section of its popular Safe Lifting Portal Web site. The new portal section is designed to assist nursing school educators in developing curricula and Safe Lifting Practices as well as to assist students with research promoting patient safety, patient handling and injury prevention techniques.
The Liko-sponsored Safe Lifting Portal is a pro bono injury prevention site designed to help nurses avoid musculoskeletal injuries caused by lifting and repositioning patients.
According to Melissa Nowitz, administrator of the Safe Lifting Portal, “We believe that Safe Lifting Practices should become an integral part in the education of nurses from the very beginning. Educating nursing students on the benefits of safe lifting practices before their entry into the workforce will help to speed the safe lifting culture change movement currently underway in hospitals and long-term-care facilities. The Safe Lifting Portal seeks to facilitate this change by serving as a comprehensive resource for educators and students.”
Resources available for nursing schools include sample curricula, articles and resources for student research, and classroom handouts.
The Safe Lifting Portal covers a variety of patient safety, injury prevention, and patient handling topics such as how to start and deploy a program, how to achieve caregiver buy-in, tracking legislative activities, and calculating projected savings using an interactive return-on-investment calculator. It also includes a monthly electronic newsletter and a question-and-answer column called “Ask the Lift Doctor.”
