Invensys to supply Foxboro control systems for innovative Plasco waste-to-energy processes

Proprietary plasma gasification process converts municipal solid waste to synthetic gas for engines driving electrical cogeneration plants and other applications

FOXBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, USA – January 3, 2007 – Invensys Process Systems has been selected by Plasco Energy Group to supply a mesh network-based Foxboro I/A Series (http://www.foxboro.com/) distributed control system (DCS) to be used in Plasco’s proprietary modular Plasma Gasification Process (PGP).

The Foxboro DCS will provide process and facility control in the Plasco PGP, a non-incineration thermal decomposition process, which breaks down municipal solid waste (MSW) into simple components such as hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. The sealed, highly efficient process uses heat from plasma arc generators and – without emissions – produces synthetic fuel gases, steam, and an inert solid slag byproduct, which can be used as light aggregate for concrete, roadway paving and in various industrial products.

The I/A Series systems will control the PGP converters and gas quality management modules, enabling the process to produce a consistent quality, environmentally friendly synthetic gas. This gas can fuel engines for direct generation of electricity. Exhaust heat from the engines, along with steam from the PGP process itself, can also drive steam turbines in a combined-cycle electrical generation plant, for which Foxboro controls will also be utilized. Typically, nearly all of the electricity produced in such a system is available for local use or sale into the distribution grid, with only a small portion required to operate the process.

The scalable Plasco PGP energy recovery solution can help businesses and municipalities consume thousands of tons of solid waste annually. The Plasco PGP process design and Foxboro control systems are modular, allowing the combined-cycle generation plant to be expanded incrementally to suit MSW disposal and power needs.

About Plasco Energy Group Inc.
Plasco Energy Group, Inc (Plasco) was formed from two companies, RCL Plasma, Inc. and Plasco Energy Corp. The two companies employed RCL’s patented Plasma Gasification Process (PGP) to treat waste or condition certain fuels, including coal gasification. Plasco is a private Canadian high-technology firm federally incorporated in 2005. It has invented, developed and patented processes using plasma arc technology for the environmentally sound conversion of waste to heat and energy-rich gas and the cost effective generation of electricity. Plasco has a demonstration facility in Castelgalli, Spain, in conjunction with its environmental management partner HERA Holding of Spain. Further information on Plasco Energy Group and its PGP technology can be found at www.plascoenergygroup.com

New generation of Triconex I/O systems announced

New high-density modules, enhanced diagnostics and ATEX compliance help increase performance and reduce installed costs for Invensys’ flagship safety instrumented systems (SIS)

DALLAS, TEXAS, USA (INVENSYS CUSTOMER CONFERENCE) – December 6, 2006 – The Triconex unit of Invensys Process Systems today announced a new generation of I/O subsystems for its flagship Tricon triple-modular-redundant (TMR) safety and critical control systems.

The new family of I/O modules offers higher point density, higher resolution, faster scan rates, an innovative approach for per-point supervision, and user-configurable nominal load limits in the digital output modules. These new features provide increased speed and better accuracy in high-speed critical control applications, while decreasing the cost per I/O point and cost of ownership.

Triconex (http://www.triconex.com/) has also released the Version 10.2.1 of the Tricon safety instrumented system platform. This provides Tricon users with increased levels of flexibility in configuring safe and reliable critical control systems. Triconex has also released TriStation 1131 version 4.1.437 developer’s workbench within Tricon v10.2.1, to support the configuration of the new family of I/O modules.

Within the new high-density line of I/O modules, Triconex also announced TÜV certification for European Union ATEX standards covering I/O and field terminations in potentially explosive atmospheres. I/O modules and external termination panels for Tricon systems are now available to meet application requirements for non-incendive electrical equipment in hazardous locations such as volatile gas environments.

The new ATEX Triconex I/O module and termination panel certification allows users to comply with non-incendive and thermally limited termination directives without the need for isolation barriers or similar configurations. In addition to providing an ATEX-compliant solution that extends from the safety system to the field wiring, the certification provides significant installation and maintenance cost advantages over isolation barriers.

In addition to the new family of I/O Products, Triconex announced the Enhanced Diagnostics Monitor v1.1.111, a Windows XP-based software application that provides a more comprehensive view of the health of the Triconex safety systems. This application helps users make better troubleshooting decisions when maintaining their safety systems configurations, minimizing the chances of downtime.

“Taken together, these important Triconex developments help users optimize the availability of their production assets by providing new levels of performance, reliability and maintainability of their control infrastructure without compromising the safety of the process,” said Luis Duran, Triconex Brand Director at Invensys Process Systems.

Invensys and Cutler Technology Corp. sign global Advanced Process Control agreement

Invensys adds CTC’s new ADMC technology to its portfolio of asset performance management solutions; will help HPI plants utilize previously untapped production capacity

DALLAS, TEXAS, USA (INVENSYS CUSTOMER CONFERENCE) – Dec. 4, 2006 – Invensys Process Systems (Foxboro, MA) announced at a press conference here today that it has signed a sales and marketing agreement with Cutler Technology Corp. (San Antonio, TX). Under this agreement, Invensys Process Systems becomes a global re-seller and a certified implementer for CTC’s patented Adaptive Dynamic Matrix Controller (ADMC)™ technology. This technology represents the first major development in Advanced Process Control (APC) in 30 years.

With nearly 300 advanced control, simulation, and process optimization solutions consultants based around the world, Invensys is now the largest authorized CTC re-seller and certified implementer. CTC’s unique ADMC technology will play an important role in Invensys’ asset performance management strategy by helping refineries, petrochemical plants, and other complex process plants that find themselves in a production-constrained business environment to utilize previously untapped capacity. (SimSci-Esscor’s well-proven Connoisseur® multivariable predictive controller will remain Invensys’ preferred APC solution for central station and industrial power plants.)

ADMC was developed by Dr. Charles Cutler, inventor of DMC (Dynamic Matrix Control)™ and DMCplus, the most widely used multivariable controller technology in the HPI industry. Dr. Cutler’s new ADMC is the world’s only Adaptive Multivariable Controller™. This technology, which has already been proven in a large-scale US refinery, utilizes a unique open loop (all valve) model of the process. This eliminates the PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) process controllers from the control hierarchy to solve many of the problems encountered with conventional APC technology in complex, interactive HPI processes. The ADMC technology allows the controller to automatically adapt to inevitable changes in the process, improving performance and minimizing support costs over time. It also provides the ability to utilize the full range of control valves, thus permitting the controller to operate safely with valves fully open. In many situations, the ability to maintain optimum control with the valves fully open can enable capacity-restrained plants to increase production by as much as two to three percent. In a typical HPI plant, this can help increase bottom-line profits by hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

Additional economic benefits can be obtained by implementing the ADMC technology in conjunction with Invensys’ well-proven ROMeo optimization solution. In these implementations, ROMeo would establish the optimum setpoints for the ADMC controllers. Invensys can implement these solutions in conjunction with the Foxboro I/A Series distributed control system (DCS) or any other popular DCS that might already be in place.

Under the recent agreement, Invensys is certified to implement ADMC on process units and will also provide ongoing training and other support services for ADMC implementations.

For more information on Invensys’ global ADMC implementation and support services, readers should contact their local Invensys Solutions sales representative or send an e-mail (indicating physical address) to stuart.parker@ips.invensys.com.
