VeriPRO from Howard Leight Wins Prestigious Industry Award for Innovation

howardleight_4c2SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA, June 21 2010 – The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has awarded its Product Innovation Award to VeriPRO®, the earplug fit testing system from Howard Leight®. The award, which is designed to recognize excellence and innovation within the safety industry, was presented at the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards Gala Dinner held during Safety and Health Expo 2010.

VeriPRO makes it easy to determine the Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) of a worker fitted with any earplugs through a simple listening test.

This allows both safety managers and workers to ascertain if the worker receives optimal protection from noise with their earplugs, requires additional training, or needs to try a different model.

“Hearing conservation is an area that we are passionate about,” said Josephine Audoin, Marketing Manager for Sperian Protection UK. “We are delighted that the genuine innovation demonstrated by VeriPRO has been recognized by the British safety community.”

A report recently issued by the UK Health and Safety Executive, entitled “Real World Use and Performance of Hearing Protection,” gave a positive indication about the availability of appropriate Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) in the UK. However, it also reported that “possibly

only 60% of workers supposedly using hearing protection are in fact protected.” One of the major reasons for this (and this applies particularly to ear plugs) is that the HPD is incorrectly fitted. Another concern for employers is the weakness of the published attenuation ratings system in regards to the specification of earplugs. The published attenuation ratings system only provides a theoretical level of hearing protection as opposed to an actual measurement of protection.

To help combat these issues, Howard Leight developed VeriPRO. VeriPRO benefits those that manage safety and employees alike. For the safety

professional, occupational health manager or site manager it fulfils European Directive 2003/10/EC requirements for training. For employees, VeriPRO demonstrates the importance of hearing protection in the workplace, and helps employees select and compare protectors to find the best choice for their ears and specific applications.

Unlike other field verification systems, VeriPRO can be used with any earplug, and the tests performed in virtually any setting. VeriPRO offers two test protocols. The Complete Check runs employees through five frequencies to determine PAR and is recommended for annual use. The Quick Check is a simplified test of earplug fit at one frequency, used as a fast and easy pass/fail check for more frequent use.

The VeriPRO system consists of PC-based software, an audiometrically optimized headset, audio processor, QuickStart guide and USB cable.

Howard Leight / Sperian Hearing Protection Experts to Present at National Hearing Conservation Association Conference

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, U.S.A. — February 15, 2010— Hearing conservation experts from Howard Leight / Sperian Hearing Protection will be presenters at the 2010 National Hearing Conservation Association’s (NHCA) Conference, February 25-27, 2010, in Orlando, Fla.

Brad K. Witt, Director of Hearing Conservation, and Dr. Theresa Y. Schulz, Lt. Col., USAF (ret), CPS/A, Hearing Conservation Manager, both of Howard Leight/Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC will participate in two key workshops at the NHCA’s “Explore the World of Hearing Loss Prevention” Conference.

“Howard Leight has always been dedicated to the prevention of occupational hearing loss,” Renee Bessette, COHC, Marketing Manager, Howard Leight/Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC said. “We are a proud member of NHCA and are pleased to share our knowledge, experience and best practices in hearing loss prevention with this audience.”

The workshops are:

  • Hands-on fit-testing,” Thursday, Feb. 25. As part of the full-day workshop focusing on the world’s leading fit-testing technologies available to the hearing conservation professional, Witt will present details of Howard Leight’s new VeriPRO® technology that enables safety managers to ensure their employees are getting the most out of their hearing protection devices. The VeriPRO system measures real-world attenuation of unmodified earplugs and can be used as a means to improve individual employee training and enhance the overall effectiveness of hearing conservation programs. Hands-on demonstrations of all available technologies will follow in the afternoon.

  • Hearing loss prevention: The basics/Hearing Protective Devices”, Thursday, Feb. 25. Presented by Dr. Schulz, this section of “The Basics” workshop will focus on hearing protector function, how hearing protection devices (HPDs) are tested and rated (with particular reference to the Noise Reduction Rating), and the performance gains available from the use of dual hearing protection.

“Hearing conservationists can measure, assess, document, and counsel, but when it comes to effective intervention, our primary and sometimes only tool, is a hearing protector. We all must become more knowledgeable about the specification of hearing protection devices and their use in our hearing conservation programs,” Dr. Schulz said.

Nucor Steel Improves Worker Hearing Protection with New Howard Leight Technology

SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND, USA, October 14, 2009 – Though most companies are committed to employee Hearing Conservation Programs, many still struggle to obtain a true assessment of the specific effectiveness of their efforts – and of the individual hearing protection products they deploy – on a worker-by-worker basis.

A new free case study, “Nucor Provides Measurable Worker Hearing Protection with Howard Leight Technology” details how Nucor Steel is using new state-of-the-art VeriPRO® earplug fit testing technology from Howard Leight® to evaluate whether each individual employee is receiving optimal on-the-job hearing protection.

The case study is available free to download from: http://www.hearforever.org/nucor.

“You could look at an earplug and the NRR rating on it but you weren’t actually sure which earplug gave the best protection for a specific individual,” explained Randy Cooper, site manager of safety, health, and security at Nucor Corporation complex in Huger, South Carolina.

“There was never a way to actually measure the fit and ultimately workers risk hearing loss while companies risked monetary damages and potential regulatory citations,” he said.

VeriPRO measures attenuation of earplugs by having the user balance tones presented to each ear at easily-heard levels. This means there is no need for a sound booth or quiet room. Accurate VeriPRO earplug fit testing can even be administered in moderate background noise.

At Nucor, the reportable Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) measurements, provided by VeriPRO aid managers with the transition to the EPA’s recent Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) change from a fixed number to a range.

In addition, the VeriPRO earplug fit testing system also lets Nucor managers determine whether employees are receiving optimal protection, require additional training on earplug fit testing, or should try a different model.

The case study details Nucor’s use of VeriPRO technology to:

  • Obtain objective data to fit the best earplugs for each employee
  • Provide breakthrough measurement of in-ear noise exposure on the job
  • Document information to help prevent worker compensation claims
  • Improve resources for the company’s hearing protection and successful Hearing Conservation Programs
